• Graduated from Melbourne University as a Brew master(1975)
• Failed to find a suitable job due to lack of acceptance of women in the field
• Headed to Europe looking for opportunities
• Met Leslie Auchincloss founder of Irish firm Biocon Biochemicals and decided to expand the
company to India
• In 1978, Biocon India was formed and Kiran Mazumdar shaw was in charge
FROM A SMALL
GARAGE TO A LEADING
MNC
• Initially operating from her Garage, the company started with
producing Industrial enzymes
• Sale of enzymes gave her cash flow to fund the research and
production of pharmaceutical drugs
• Gradually moved the Business into manufacturing medicines
• Her young age and relatively new area of Biotechnology put
some constraints on acquiring funds
• Despite the hardships, her innovation was turning profits for the company
• Biocon India soon ventured into US and European market
• With 40% shares of the company, she became the richest woman in India after
Biocon’s IPO in 2004 
• Today, Biocon is the largest producer of insulin in India, and the first company
in the country to gain the approval of USFDA for certain cancer-related and
other drugs.
• Biocon is also a leading manufacturer of biosimilars, immunosuppressants and
other speciality molecules with presence in over 120 countries
