ART
- Art is creation.

-Creating something new, something original,

and something different. Art is life. It is
creating life on a material and making
inanimate objects to have life. To create
art is to give life (Ramon Orlina—Glass
Sculptor).
CONTEMPORARY
- Current, now, the present.
CONTEMPORARY ART

• Strictly speaking, the term "contemporary art" refers to art

made and produced by artists living today. Today's artists work
in and respond to a global environment that is culturally
diverse, technologically advancing, and multifaceted. Working
in a wide range of mediums, contemporary artists often reflect
and comment on modern-day society.
• It is the art of today, produced by artists
who are living in the twenty-first century.
Contemporary art provides an
opportunity to reflect on contemporary
society and the issues relevant to
ourselves, and the world around us.
Contemporary artists work in a globally
influenced, culturally diverse, and
technologically advancing world.
• Their art is a dynamic combination of
materials, methods, concepts, and subjects
that challenge traditional boundaries and
defy easy definition.

• Refers to current and very recent practice.

It also refers to works of art made by
living artists.
• Tends to be assessed thematically and subjectively,
drawing on an expanded range of theoretical and
practical disciplines.
• Can be driven by both theory and ideas, and is also
characterized by a blurring of the distinction between
art and other categories of cultural experience, such as
television, cinema, mass media, entertainment and
digital tecnologye
Contemporary Performance

• Contemporary performance is hybrid work that

integrates text, dance, objects, music, costumes,
lighting, image, sound, sets, and vocal expression
into complex interactive systems.
• Contemporary performance collages are often non-narrative,
technically rigorous, and carefully orchestrated anarchic chaos.
They unsettle perception, demand critical engagement from
audiences, address conceptual debates within aesthetics, draw
on a diverse range of cultural interests, and bring pleasure to
populations across the globe.” (Morgan v. P. Pecelli
Characteristics of Philippine Contemporary Arts (by classification)
1. Dominant/Mainstream (foreign influenced, industry-driven,
technology assisted, oriented for mass-consumption) Example: Ogie
Alcasid, Sarah Geronimo, etc. .
2. Alternative (usually social realist and/or advocacy-
oriented)Individuals Example: Joey Ayala, Grace Nono, Kidlat Tahimik,
etc.)
3. Artist Groups/Collectives (practices are collaborative and
interdisciplinary) Example: 98B COLLABoratory, Ugatlahi Artist
Collective, Sipat Lawin Ensemble, NeoAngono Artists Collective, Anino
Shadowplay Collective, Gerilya, Pinikpikan, etc.)
4. Traditional/Indigenous (preserves local traditions) Examplee:
GAMABA awardees – Samaon Sulaiman, Lang Dulay, etc
Characteristics of Philippine Contemporary Arts:

1. Innovation in Art: Contemporary artists have been the pioneers in

introducing new forms of art to the world. Different art forms have
been combined or newer ideas employed to bring out newer types of art.
Collage art is an example of innovation that proved to be a great
example of modern contemporary art. Likewise, mixed forms of
assemblage, different variants of kinetic art as well as different
categories of photography, animations and land art are a result of
bringing together newer ideas.
2. Using New Materials: Another characteristic that was
employed to bring about modern art was the employment of
different objects, materials that looked useless to the
common man but were brought to great use by modern artists.
For instance, painters used pieces of newspapers as a
backdrop to their canvases and created masterpieces of
modern art from it. It was unprecedented to use something
like a newspaper in a painting. Similarly, sculptors used pieces
of junk to produce what is now known as junk art. Also,
common items like cars, chairs, boxes have been used
masterfully to create assemblages.
3. Use of Color:
Traditionally, color was used as means to bring
reality to paintings and art pieces. However, modern
artists experimented with colors and used it
unconventionally to make new textures and themes
and used them in their pieces of art. Expressionism
was mostly based on the vibrant and expressive use
of colors as a tool to innovate their paintings.
4. Newer Techniques:

Modern art is not only about playing and experimenting with

colors and objects, rather it has also given birth to newer
techniques that form the basis for contemporary art today.
Chromolithography is a prime example of a technique that was
developed by Jules Cheret. Similarly, surreal artists
introduced automatic drawing to the world of art.
Decalcomania and Frottage are also vital techniques that
developed with time and are employed to produce
contemporary art. After the Second World War, several
movements by artists began that gave the world newer forms
of art that shaped up to be known as contemporary art, today.
