Productivity: Executive Summary
PostScript printing showed various advantages during our testing. Despite being 4 ppm slower in
color (36 vs. 40) when compared to the HP, the MP C407 performed at a faster rate and boasted
higher print efficiency numbers in PowerPoint, Excel and Acrobat.

PCL print results showed even greater advantages for the MP C407. Results were similar in Excel but
Word, PowerPoint and Acrobat showed significant advantages for the MP C407. Overall, it proved to
be a much more consistent and efficient device.

Print Duplex Productivity was great on both devices and identical at 86% of efficiency.

Copy testing was split down the middle. The MP C407 showed slight advantages in simplex mode
while the HP M577 had advantages with duplex documents.

When it came to Scanning, the MP C407 did not disappoint. Although monochrome simplex speeds
slightly favored the HP (45 vs. 42). The MP C407 destroyed it with its color and duplex speeds. The
MP C407 also showed advantages when it came to scan file sizes. In both black and white and color it
typically provided smaller file sizes when compared to the HP. The MP C407 also offered better
versatility with its scan settings (dpi choices, compression, etc.)
Application Performance Print Testing
All Application Performance Testing is conducted with QualityLogic’s PageSense automated
testing software.

Our A4 test suite is made up of 15 test files consisting of a total of 680 printed pages across
4 applications: Microsoft Office 2010 (4 test files for Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) and 3
files for Adobe Acrobat. All tests are run two to three times based on the consistency of the
results, totaling about 4,080 printed pages.
Test files range from simple to very complex test files with embedded graphics and fonts
and contain color elements.

Note: The total number of pages run on each machine for testing is approximately 15,000
(Print/Copy/Scan).
Reading the Charts….
The following charts use nomenclature you may not be familiar with. Here are some helpful hints:

Blue plus signs indicate a significant productivity advantage (typically areas with a 5% higher
efficiency rating or greater)

The longer the bar, the better in the efficiency charts (all numbers are percentages).

The shorter the bar, the better in the performance charts (all times are in seconds).

All times are cumulative results from an application. In other words; the sum of all given test files per
application

T1P = Time to First Page: This is the first page out time
TLP = Time to Last Page: This is the last page out time

Summary: There were no major issues or problems with the MP C407 or HP M577.
 We test image quality by two distinct methods.

 Subjective: a general look at photographic, text, and tonal properties of a printed image when
viewed by the eye

 Scientific: a scientific analysis of the printed image based on standards set via a benchmark and with
measurable values and statistics
Executive Summary
Overall, image quality on the MP C407 was excellent; photographic and standard office documents looked crisp and professional. The MP
C407 does a great job printing and copying fonts. Halftones and print resolution were great using both drivers. The MP C407 also delivers
rich black densities as high as 1.49. Print consistency was good across a measured page. Greater consistency leads to less banding, and more
accuracy within various regions of the printed page. The combination of text and graphics would be fine for handouts such as formal reports,
and marketing materials to clients or colleagues that are seeking to impress.

Halftones:
The MP C407 can generate smoother halftones. What this means to customers is a more accurate reproduction of the original image.
So photos will be more realistic for both color and gray scale.

Lines:
The ability to print closely spaced lines without artifacts is not an easy task. While the HP M577 does an acceptable job, the MP C407’s line
reproduction is ahead of the pack. This will lead to better quality prints, copies and scans of technical documents, bar codes, maps, etc.

Photographic Reproduction:
The MP C407 was as good as or better than all of the products in this test group. Printed, Copied and Scanned photos had excellent color
matching, halftone reproduction, smoothness, and saturation.

The MP C407’s ability to print, copy and scan text, fine lines, and photographic images is better then the HP M577 as a whole.
This means customers get a true reproduction of the original.

The HP M577 demonstrated color accuracy issues. Several colors were not true to the original and appeared faded. Print consistency was
great on this device; however , we noticed fonts were faded and broken-up at smaller sizes.
Print Gamut/Consistency PS Driver
MP C407 HP M577

Gamut Overlay Print Consistency

Gamut: The MP C407 PS driver had a significantly larger gamut of 43.69% when compared to the HP M577. The MP
C407 has the ability to print a much larger range of colors; especially when printing blues, greens, yellows and reds.
Print Consistency: The HP M577 had far greater print consistency when printing solid color test targets compared to the
MP C407. Greater consistency leads to less banding, and more accuracy within various regions of the printed page. The
MP C407 was also rated good print consistency.
Gamut and Print Consistency is measured on a Greytag SpectroScan table that takes 450 measurements of solid colored
sheets from top to bottom and side to side.

BOTTOM LINE: The MP C407 provided good results when printing small and large fonts using the PS driver. The MP C407
printed some hollow text making the characters appear incomplete.

The HP M577 printed smaller text too lightly and broken up, making it difficult to make out some of the letters. This was
particularly noticeable with yellow.
Printed Images PS Driver
MP C407 HP M577

BOTTOM LINE: The MP C407 produced excellent results when printing photographic images from the PS driver. The MP
C407 displayed excellent color accuracy and gradations were smooth with no banding. The MP C407 also delivered a closer
representation of the original than the HP M577.
The HP M577 generated average quality prints. The HP demonstrated color accuracy issues and prints appeared faded with
a magenta cast in the blues and the red.
Print Gamut/Consistency PCL6 Driver
MP C407 HP M577

Gamut Overlay Print Consistency

Gamut: The HP M577 PCL6 driver had a 4.04% larger gamut than the MP C407. The HP can print more blues and greens;
while the MP C407 can print more yellows and reds. This is not necessarily an indicator of overall print quality as the MP
C407 print samples were still ranked as good.
Print Consistency: Print consistency on the PCL6 driver was much better on the HP M577 and provided adequate results
when printing solid color test targets and demonstrated acceptable accuracy across the entire page.
Gamut and Print Consistency is measured on a Greytag SpectroScan table that takes 450 measurements of solid colored
sheets from top to bottom and side to side.
