Lesson 2: Types of Communication

Communication
-the exchange of thoughts, ideas,
concepts, and views between or among two
or more people, so various contexts come
into play

-takes on different contexts resulting in


people having different views on
communication types
Context
-the circumstance or environment in
which communication takes place

-this may include the physical or actual


setting, the value positions of a
speaker/listener, the relevance or
appropriateness of a message conveyed,
and groupings of people that constitute a
communication situation

psychological in nature

Kinds of Non-Verbal Communication

1. Paralanguange/Vocalics- is about
“how” something is said, not what is said

2. Kinesics (body language)-deals with


physical movement. This includes facial
expressions, gestures, and posture.

*Gesture-are body movements that


emphasize one intended meaning conveyed
verbally
Types of Gestures

1. Descriptive gestures-help clarify the


meaning of a verbal message
2. Emphatic gestures-emphasize the
meaning of what is being said
3. Suggestive gestures- refers to symbols
of ideas and emotions
4. Prompting gestures-used to elicit a
desired response from the listeners.
3. Haptics-is the study of communication
by touch
4. Proxemics-refers to the study of how
space and distance influence
communication
5. Chronemics-deals with how time is used
as an element of communication

6. Artifacts-physical objects that we can


use for communication purposes
7. Silence-the absence of sounds
Visual Communication
-the type of communication that uses
visuals to convey information and/or
messages
-signs, symbols, imagery, maps, graphs,
charts, diagrams, photos, drawings or
illustrations and even various forms of
electronic communication

1. Intrapersonal Communication
-came from the Latin prefix intra- that
means within or inside
-means talking to oneself, self talk, inner
talk, inner monologue, or inner dialogue
2. Interpersonal Communication
-came from the Latin prefix inter- that
means between, among together

-an interactive exchange


Types of Interpersonal Communication

a. Dyadic Communication
-conversation between one speaker and
one listener
b. Small Group Communication
-Requires from 3-15 people to study an
issue, discuss a problem, and come up with
a solution or plan

c. Public communication
-One speaker addresses many listeners,
collectively known as an audience
3. Extended Communication
-involves the use of electronic media
4. Organizational communication
-Refers to the interaction of members
along the links in an organizational
structure.
Types of Organizational Structure:
• Formal
-allows communication to take place via
designated channels of message flow
between positions
• Informal
-comes from unofficial channels of
message flow

-dictates the behavior that an employee
should possess
