RECEPTIVE HEART

(MARK 8:20)
DISCIPLESHIP
• When the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus
had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some
doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said,
• ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go
and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  and teaching them to obey
everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the
very end of the age.’
• Mathew 28:16-20
DISCIPLESHIP IS MODELING AND TEACHING
CHRISTIANS THE PRECEPTS OF THE BIBLE—MAINLY
PRAYER, DOCTRINE, CHRISTIAN LIVING, AND
WORSHIP. YES, WE ARE STILL TO EVANGELIZE, BUT
THAT IS NOT OUR MAIN MISSION AND CALL! WHEN WE
EVANGELIZE, WE MUST REALIZE THAT IT IS THE ROLE
OF THE HOLY SPIRIT TO BRING PEOPLE INTO AN
INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. THIS IS AN ACT OF
DIVINE INTERVENTION AND GRACE.
A DISCIPLE IS ONE WHO GROWS IN CHRIST
AND IN SO DOING MODELS AND TEACHES
CHRISTIANS THE PRECEPTS OF THE BIBLE,
PRAYER, DOCTRINE, RELATIONSHIP,
CHRISTIAN LIVING, SERVICE, AND WORSHIP,
TO NAME THE MAIN ONES.
PARABLE OF
THE SOWER
Matthew 13: 3-9

Then he told them many things in
parables, saying: “A farmer went out to
sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the
seed, some fell along the path, and the
birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on
rocky places, where it did not have
much soil. It sprang up quickly, because
the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun
came up, the plants were scorched, and
they withered because they had no
root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns,
which grew up and choked the plants.

Still other seed fell on good soil, where
it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or
thirty times what was sown. 9 Whoever
has ears, let them hear.”.

THE DISCIPLES CAME TO HIM AND
ASKED, “WHY DO YOU SPEAK TO THE

HE REPLIED, “BECAUSE THE

GIVEN TO YOU, BUT NOT TO THEM
THE METHODS OF JESUS ABOUT
DISCIPLESHIP
1. Jesus was deeply committed to relational
ministry.
2. Jesus invested early in a few.
3. Jesus often slipped away to pray.
Jesus escaped the crowds to pray.
4. Jesus loved sinners profoundly.
5. Jesus balanced His efforts to win the lost,
build believers, and equip a few workers.
1. JESUS WAS DEEPLY COMMITTED TO
RELATIONAL MINISTRY.

John 3:22 Jesus “spent time with his

disciples”.
After this, Jesus and his disciples went
22

out into the Judean countryside, where

he spent some time with them, and
baptized.
The Greek word translated “spent time
with” here is diatribo. It means “getting
under the skin of.” Jesus gave His disciples
time to get to know Him and took time to
invest in them.
2. JESUS INVESTED EARLY IN A FEW.

Within eighteen months of beginning His

ministry, Jesus identified five individuals
Andrew, John, Simon Peter, Philip, and
Nathanael. These are common men. Men who
worked as fisherman and in other common
trades. These are not philosophers, rabbis, or
politicians. These are average people like you
and me.
Jesus Calls the First Disciples
The next day again John was standing with two of his
35

disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and

said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples
heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38 Jesus
turned and saw them following and said to them, “What
are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which
means Teacher), “where are you staying?”
He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came
39

and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him
that day, for it was about the tenth hour.[a] 40 One of the two
who heard John speak and followed Jesus[b] was Andrew,
Simon Peter's brother. 41 He first found his own brother
Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which
means Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at
him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be
called Cephas” (which means Peter[c]).
3. JESUS OFTEN SLIPPED AWAY TO PRAY.

Jesus escaped the crowds to pray

More than forty- five times in the
Gospels, Jesus escaped the crowds
to pray. The busier He became the
more He prayed. His ministry began
with prayer and ended with prayer.
Before every major turning point in
Jesus’s life, He spent focused time in
prayer.
4. JESUS LOVED SINNERS PROFOUNDLY.

Jesus was described as a “friend

of sinners.” His opponents used
that title to condemn Him, but
Jesus wore it as a badge of honor.
He associated with those others
condemned. He befriended those
others despised. He was always
drawn to the neediest, not to the
sharpest.
5. JESUS BALANCED HIS EFFORTS TO WIN
THE LOST, BUILD BELIEVERS, AND EQUIP A
FEW WORKERS.

Jesus understood that His

mandate was to “make
disciples.” Disciple-making for
Jesus meant meeting the
needs of people where they
were spiritually and then
challenging them to the next
level.
