DISADVANTAGES

OF
ORAL COMMUNICATION

GROUP 3
BSBA -2A
NO RECORD
 In oral communication, messages are difficult to record. So it is
impossible to preserve the messages for the future.

 Messages are not preserved in oral communication, so they are not

found in the record book. It does not leave a record for future use.

 Oral messages have no legal standing in the absence of a record.

These messages will not be available for retrieval in the future.

EXPENSIVE
It is also expensive media of communication.

To send oral messages to a distant location, we must use the

telephone, radio, television, and so on. These are high-priced
mechanical devices. As a result, the receiver must spend money
on such devices in order to participate in oral communication.

DISTORTION OF
 IfWORD
THE distortion of the word occurs in oral communication, then the
main goals of the organization may be filed.

 Because oral messages are not recorded, their meanings can be

easily distorted. Such distortion may result in a rumor that travels
faster than the wind. There is a chance that an incorrect message
will reach its destination. It could be due to noise or the receiver
forgetting part or all of the message. Because oral messages are
ineffective over long distances, messages are sent via fax, telex, or
e-mail.

INACCURACY
There is very possibility of inaccurate messages to reach the
destination. So, the reverse result of expected plan may be
occurred.

Oral communication may suffer front the problems of inaccuracy.

Inaccuracy may arise if the speaker chooses wrong words to
convey the message or leaves out relevant details, it noise
disrupts the communication process; or if the receiver forgets a
part of the message.

LIMITED USE
The scope of usage of oral communication is limited. It is
not suitable for lengthy messages. It should be sued for a
short message.

Sometimes oral communication becomes time-consuming,

especially in meetings and conferences where nothing
comes out after long discussions.

PROBABILITY OF OMITTING MAIN SUBJECT

Sometimes, the main subject may be omitted to express a word for communicating.
So, the expected result may not be achieved.

There is the probability of omitting the main subject, thus lending to confusing
speech, it is true that information can be omitted, because oral communication does
not have any written material for the speaker to look at to guide him so as not to
leave important information.

6 Jovelyn Lintawahan 09.24.2022

CONFUSED SPEECH
Sometimes the receiver fails to understand the meaning of a message
due to the habitual productions of the speaker.

If the message’s receiver has a hearing impairment, the goal of oral

communication becomes more difficult to achieve. Obviously, a partial
hearing will result in partial communication. As a result, all parties
involved in a communication will be perplexed

7 Gucela Ybañez Maricel 09.24.2022

NO LEGAL VALIDITY
There is any legal validity of the oral message. As, the oral
messages are not taped and kept records, so it can be denied
easily if the situation goes against the speaker.

Hard to maintain, since they are unsecured and have no

record for reference, oral has no hard copy and for this
reason, that information can not be pass from generation to
generation.

Another disadvantage of oral communication is that it delays the
decision-making process. At the time of delivering the speech, the
speaker spends a lot of time in explaining the contents of the
LATE DECISION

message. Consequently, decision-making is delayed.

It takes time to reach a decision. In the beginning stage, some time is

killed in the discussion of any personal matters. Besides some time is
also wasted on the irrelevant discussion. In this way, decision-making
is delayed.

LESS IMPORTANT
In oral communication, meaningless speech can mislead the
main effects of communication. But when the information comes
out in written, we take it seriously.

Another disadvantage of the oral communication is the fact that

if the speaker is not a good speaker then an effective
transmission of information might not take place. A speaker that
is not good would speak with little or no confidence and be
unable to provide clear and concise speech.

LACK OF SECRECY

In oral communication, important and secret information may be disclosed.

At the time of communicating with others orally, the communicator may carelessly
express secret information in front of other outside party. This brings unpleasant
consequences for the business.

When a speaker speaks, he may not be careful with his words. As a result, confidential
information may be disclosed.

DEFECTIVE
Oral communication is defective for the company’s policy,
procedure, programs, law, and other important information.

Things such as background noise could interfere during the

transmission of information and render the information
ineffective.

People often transmit false or wrong information orally to

gain undue advantage. Since, there is no document of such
false transmission; it is difficult to find out the person
responsible for it.

12 Arianne Flores 09.24.2022

The speaker often gives a message without having properly organized
it earlier.
CREATE So, it is possible that he may not be able to make himself
MISUNDERSTANDING

properly to communicate with the receiver. As a result,

misunderstanding may develops.

In oral communication, there is every possibility that the spoken words

are not clearly heard or understood. Therefore, there is a chance of
misunderstanding.
