DURABILITY OF CONCRETE

A durable concrete element is one that is designed and constructed to protect embedded metal from
corrosion and to perform satisfactory in the working environment for the lifetime of the structure

Clause 3.1.5

• Durability of concrete may be defined as the ability of concrete to resist:

− weathering action,
− chemical attack, and
− abrasion while maintaining its desired engineering properties.

REQUIREMENTS FOR DURABILITY

1. Exposure condition

2. Requirements for concrete cover

3. Shape and size of member

4. Limits of spacing of reinforcement

5. Span – effective depth ratios

EXPOSURE CONDITION

NOMINAL COVER
Clause 3.3.1.1

The limiting values of cover given in Tables 3.3 and 3.4 of the code which ensure adequate provision to
satisfy durability and fire protection are specified in terms of ‘nominal’ cover to all reinforcement including
