Definition of Hypothesis

IN GENERAL James E. Creighton,

Hypothesis comes from the word "hypo"
which means "under" and "thesa" which A hypothesis is a tentative or
means "truth". A hypothesis can be temporary conjecture that predicts the
defined as a provisional answer that still situation to be observed.
has to be tested again, or a summary of
theoretical conclusions obtained from a
literature review.
Functions of the Hypothesis
According to Asahan (in Singh, 2006) several functions
of the hypothesis in the research process are:
1. Hypothesis is a temporary solution to a problem with some truth that allows a
researcher to start research.
2. Hypothesis offers a specific basis for establishing what must be learned to
provide a solution to a problem.
3. Each hypothesis can lead to the formulation of another hypothesis.
4. An initial hypothesis can take the form of a final hypothesis. Each hypothesis
helps the researcher with a statement that can be tested objectively, accepted or
rejected and leads the researcher to interpret the results and draw conclusions
related to the initial goal.
Why do the Hypothesis is
importhant?
● The hypothesis serves as the "eye" of the researcher.
● The hypothesis determines the focus of the research.
● The hypothesis explains the research objectives specifically.
● The hypothesis is a link.
● Hypotheses prevent blindness of researchers.
● The hypothesis functions as a guiding light.
George J. Mouly (in Singh, 2006) states that the formulation of
the hypothesis has the following objectives:

1. Hypotheses provide useful direction in research to prevent

literature review and collection of irrelevant data.
2. Hypotheses increase the researcher's sensitivity about certain
aspects of the situation that are irrelevant from the point of view
of the problem at hand
3. Hypotheses allow researchers to understand the problem under
study more clearly.
4. The hypothesis is used as a framework to convince the
researcher.
