What are materials
Language teaching has five important components:
•Students
•Teachers
•Materials
•Teaching methods and
•Evaluation

•Most substantial and observable component of pedagogy


Central position in the process of language teaching and learning


Used by teachers or learners to facilitate learning of language
 Depending on curriculum aims and the learner needs
materials are

• Prepared , edited , selected


• Verbal (oral / written )
• Non verbal ( pictures , diagrams , charts etc. )
• Teacher centered , learner centered , self learning
oriented or skill related.
• General or specific

However materials need to be flexible to cater to


individual and contextual differences
Types of materials
 Textbooks
• Interpretation promote good learning
• Develop reading skills

 Workbook
• Supplement to the textbook
• Practice
• Develop reading and writing skills

 Teachers manual
• Used as a guidance
• Helps learner indirectly
 Reference materials
• Further understanding of the topic

 Audio visual material


• exposure to language through various means
• Improve language skills

 Supplementary materials
• Supports the core material
• Adaptation and simplification of certain items in the
textbook

 Remedial material
• Fill in the learning gaps among learners
• Level the learners linguistic ability
• Used at the beginning of an academic session
Role of materials
• The function of materials depends on the users : teachers and
learners
• Big support to the teachers
• Stimulus to learning
• Most economical way of organizing the syllabus
• Organize teaching and learning process
• Objectivity in teaching and learning process
• Broaden the basis for teacher training by introducing new
techniques
• Allow learners to progress at their own rates of learning
• Opportunity for independent study and use
• Provide opportunity for self evaluation and progress in
learning

However materials facilitate learner self investment ,


provide the learners with opportunities to use the target
language to achieve communicative purposes.
