• Article 21 of the EU Charter
of Fundamental Rights
prohibits discrimination for
any reason such as sex, race,
colour, ethnic or social origin,
genetic features, language
religion or belief, political or
other opinion, membership of
a national minority, birth,
disability, age or sexual
orientation.

• O Parlamento Europeu está
firmemente empenhado na luta
contra o racismo e a xenofobia.
• Neste sentido, convidou a União
e os seus Estados-Membros a
tomar medidas para impedir e
combater o racismo e a
xenofobia através da educação,
promovendo uma cultura de
respeito e tolerância.
RIGHTS OF LGBTI PEOPLE
• The European Parliament has on
many occasions called for a
comprehensive multi-annual policy
to protect the fundamental rights of
LGBTI people. The Commission has
published a list of actions to advance
in LGBTI equality throughout the
Union.
ARTICLE 21 - NON-DISCRIMINATION
1. Any discrimination based on any ground
such as sex, race, colour, ethnic or social
origin, genetic features, language,
religion or belief, political or any other
opinion, membership of a national
minority, property, birth, disability, age
or sexual orientation shall be prohibited.
2. No âmbito de aplicação dos Tratados e
sem prejuízo das suas disposições
específicas, é proibida toda a
discriminação em razão da
nacionalidade.
UPHOLDING CITIZENS’ RIGHTS
• EU citizenship brings certain rights. This rights are listed in Articles
18 to 25 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.

European citizens have the right to:


 move and reside freely within the EU;
 not be discriminated against because of their nationality;
 vote and stand as a candidate in municipal elections and in elections to the European Parliament
wherever they live in the EU; and
 be assisted by another EU country’s embassy or a consulate when they are outside the EU and their
own country does not have an embassy or a consulate. In these cases, the consulate or embassy
should treat all EU citizens exactly as they would treat their own citizens.
