Process simulation involves designing an operational model of a process system to understand its behavior or evaluate alternative development/operation strategies. It reproduces key aspects of the system's behavior accurately. Simulation software uses flowsheeting to solve material and energy balances via computer models, allowing performance assessment of new and existing processes, implementation of control strategies, and management of plant operations. The typical steps in a simulation process are designing the flowsheet, specifying unit operations and streams, solving the model, and analyzing results.

Process Simulation
Process simulation is a process of designing an
operational model of a process system. Conduct various experiments with this model for the purpose either of understanding the behavior of the system or of evaluating alternative strategies for the development or operation of the system. It has to be able to reproduce selected aspects of the behavior of the system modelled to an accepted degree of accuracy. (Thome, 1993)
