WHAT IS LANDSLIDE?

 A landslide is also known as a landslip, is a geological phenomenan that includes a wide

range of ground movements, such as rock falls, deep failure of slopes.
 It occurs in offshore,coastal and onshore environments.
TYPES OF LANSLIDES?

 RATIONAL SLIDES: THIS SLIDE MOVES ALONG A SURFACE OF RUPTURE THAT

IS CURVED AND CONCAVE.
TYPES OF LANDSLIDES?

 TRANSLATIONAL SLIDES: it occurs when the failure surface is approximately flat or

slightly undulated.
TYPES OF LANDSLIDES?

 ROCK FALL: free falling of detached bodies of bedrock (boulders) from a cliff or a steep
slope.
TYPES OF LANDSLIDES?

 ROCK TOPPLING: it occurs when one or more rock units rotate about their base and
collapse.

 LATERAL SPREADING: it occurs when the soil mass spreads laterally and this spreading
comes with tensional cracks in the soil mass.

 DEBRIS FLOW: down slope movement of collapsed,unconsolidated material typically

along a stream channel.
CAUSES OF LANDSLIDES?

 Heavy rains.
 Earthquakes.
 Volcano eruptions.
 Floods.
 Ground water changes.
 Rapid snow melt.

EFFECTS OF LANDSLIDES?

 Destoys the slope/hill.

 Eliminates all vegetation.
 Buries house and sometimes an entire village.
 Weakens the slope and makes it more susceptible to further landslides.
LANDSLIDE PREVENTION.

 Choose a safe location to build your home, away from steep slopes and places where
landslides have occurred in the past.
 Prevent defforstation and vegetation removal.
 Avoid weakning the slope.
 Plant ground cover on slopes and build retaining walls.
 In mudflow areas, build channels or deflection walls to direct the flow around buildings.
 Educate the people about signs that a landslide is imminent so that personal safety
measures may be taken.
MY CONCLUSIONS.

 LANDSLIDES ARE A DANGEROUS HAZARD THAT CAN CAUSE SERIOUS

DAMAGES,DEATH,INJURIES AND AFFECTS A VARIETY OF RESOURCES.BY
UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENT TYPES AND CAUSES OF LANDSLIDES IT
CAN HELP US PREDICT FUTURE OCCURENCES AND REDUCE THE POTENTIAL
EFFECTS.
 GIS TECHNIQUES FOUND TO BE VERY ECONOMICAL FOR FIELD STUDY IN
INACCESSIBLE AREAS.
