How to answer:
• You need to know what these techniques are, where they are in the text and why they have
been used by the writer.
• How has this made you/ the reader got a certain viewpoint of the character from this. How
is it effective?
• Answer using PEE(ZL)
P-The writer uses ….(technique) to highlight/ show…….
E-This is evident/ can be seen in the line/ quote…. (evidence from text)
E-This creates the impression/ the writer is suggesting….
ZL: The connotations of the word (zoom in on one word from your evidence)/ the use of the
word (from evidence) implies/ suggests….
This would make the reader feel/ the result of the language used by the writer here is to
exemplify…
Example of PEEZ from a journalistic article: 2019 Question 2 Past
Paper
Task 1: Annotate the language and style
Task 2: Peez Paragraph Model Example:
The writer uses a short, dramatic and informative sentence from the onset of
the article to highlight the effect of the earthquake on the city of San
Fransisco. My evidence for this is “San Francisco is gone”. The writer
highlights an exaggerated tone to intensify the devastation and destruction
the city faces to the point where it is almost completely obliterated. In
particular the writer uses metaphorical language of ‘gone’ to exemplify that
the city is no longer what it once was. This give an extremely morose and
depressing tone and seems o have been done by the writer to create a sense
of panic and anticipation. This combined with the list of buildings ‘wiped out’
adds a bleak atmosphere to the article.
