PLANTING
CROPS
 This unit covers the knowledge, skills
and attitudes required to conduct
activities related to land preparation and
planting of agricultural crops. This unit
also includes proper handling of
seeds/seedlings/saplings for planting and
transplanting, proper use of tools and
equipment, conduct land preparation and
field lay-out.
• Clearing –is an area that's open, with no trees, especially one
in the middle of the woods or that's been cleared for planting.
• Plowing-to dig into, break up, or turn over soil with a plow.
• Harrowing-is a tillage operation or activity that further breaks
the soil into smaller fragments or bits for improved soil
condition.
• Lay-outing- locating the position of plant.
• Digging holes- allows you to break up the soil so that there is
an abundance of cracks between clods for new roots to grow.
• Watering- to pour water on to plants or the soil .
Purpose of

Land To provide the
necessary soil
Preparatio conditions; to
n control pests,
nutrient increase,
mixing oil.
Primary Tillage – Large
Crop Production

  is to attain a reasonable

depth of soft soil,
incorporate crop
residues, kill weeds, and
to aerate the soil.
Secondary Tillage- Backyard
Production
 Secondary tillage, to improve the
seedbed by increased soil
pulverization, to conserve
moisture through destruction of
weeds, and to cut up crop
residues.
No Tillage-Nursery
 (also zero tillage)
is a minimum tillage
practice in which the
crop is sown directly
into soil not tilled
since the harvest of
the previous crop.
TYPES
Grassy - are true grasses or
OF monocots.
WEEDS
2.1 Tools and materials are prepared for field lay-out.
TYPES Broad Leaf- relatively broad
OF leaves, whereas leaves of grasses and
sedges are bladelike.
WEEDS
2.1 Tools and materials are prepared for field lay-out.
TYPES Sedges-perennial plants that are
found in shallow water or moist
OF soil.
WEEDS

Conduct  The soil of a seedbed
needs to be loose and
Field Lay-out smoothed, without large
lumps. These traits are
Planting needed so that seeds can
System be planted easily, and at a
specific depth for best
SEEDBED germination. Large lumps
and uneven surface would
tend to make the planting
depth random.
SEEDBED
Conduct   refers to a raised
mound of soil or the
Field Lay- hill can simply mean
out Planting growing plants in a
clump (flat circle) rather
System than spaced individually
along a row. A raised
HILL TYPE mound has warmer soil
for germination and
better drainage.

System Planting
Square System

Square system: This is a

common system of planting
adopted in plains. The
distance from plant to plant
and row to row is kept equal.
The planting is done at each
corner of the squares.
Rectangular
system
Square System

trees are planted on each corner

of a rectangle. As the distance
between any two rows is more
than the distance between any two
trees in a row, there is no equal
distribution of space per tree.
Triangular System
Square System

 In this system of
planting, a tree is
planted on a corner
of each angle.
Hexagonal
System
Square System

 The system is
preferred where
land is costly and
very fertile with
assured irrigation.
