Visual Elements:

1. Line
- foundation of all drawings; can be used
to suggest shape, pattern, distance,
movement and a range of emotions.
Types of Lines:
● Vertical- suggests height and strength
● Horizontal- suggests distance and calm
● Diagonal- suggests movement or lack
of stability
● Zigzag- suggests anxiety or excitement
● Curve- suggests comfort and ease
2. Space
- refers to the area within, around, above or
below an object or objects.

Positive space- refers to areas where the


subject is positioned. (main focus)
Negative space- areas surrounding the subject.
(background)
3. Symbol
- a mark, sign or word that
indicates or represents an idea,
object, or relationship.
4. Color
- visual element that has the strongest effect
on our emotions.
Examples:
red- warm, angry, fire, violence, blood, love
blue- cool, peaceful, confidence, intelligence
green- nature, freshness, relaxation, jealousy
black and gray- simplicity, balance, elegance
white- purity, innocence
yellow- happiness, creativity, cowardice
orange- enthusiasm, encouragement, harvest
purple-imagination, grief
5. Gaze
- one way to convey meaning through an
image because we can see where and how a
figure is looking at something.
6. Distance
- the connection between the viewer and
subject. ( how close or far away the
subject is shown)
7. Framing
- the presentation of visual elements in
an image, especially the placement of
the subject in relation to other objects.
- a technique used to bring focus to a
subject.
