MANAGE REPORTERS
Artist &
This chapter focuses on the most important element and creator in many work of art, which is the artist
or the artisan. The artists’ or artisans’ medium, technique, and process in their arts stem from their urge

artisan
to create, which is universal and widespread. Artists and artisans are driven by their sense of wonder
and curiosity. The stages in the creative process would reflect the notable works from the different
artists and artisans who were given the highest recognition from our country.

ARTIST

1
The word "artist" is generally defined as an art practitioner, such as a painter, sculptor,
choreographer, dancer, writer, poet, musicians, and the like, who produces or creates
indirectly functional arts with aesthetic value using imagination. Thus, artists provide us with
paintings, sculptures, dances, music, literary pieces, and so on, as a means of provoking our
thoughts, ideas, and emotions that are necessary to discover ourselves and our being.

ARTIST

1
Artists are creative individuals who use their imagination and skills to communicate in an
art form. They use the materials of an art to solve visual problems. Artists look to many
sources for inspiration. Some look forward to their natural and cultural environment for ideas;
others look within themselves for creative imagination.

Kinds of Artist
• Visual Artist creates art works to be exhibited in galleries, museums or in public spaces.
Artist expresses their ideas, messages or emotions through their work of art. Most of their
artwork are put up for sale. The Visual Artist may specialize in drawing, painting, pottery
or sculpture printmaking, design, crafts, photography, video, film making and architecture.

An artist is a person who performs any of the creative arts. This captures all forms of art. For an
example, a person who paints can be referred to as an artist. In the modern world, the term artist is
also used for musicians as well. This is why people often tend to hear the words 'young artist,
through media to refer to. emerging musicians. Here it is important to highlight that the term artist is
not only attributed for those who create art as an occupation, but also for those who are skilled in a
particular activity such as drawing. designing, composing, etc.

1
The specialty of an artist is that he is able to create art for the
sake of art itself without needing any ulterior motives. Some artists
create their works of art for the satisfaction of the society in which
they live. In this case, they have to confine to the societal demands
and limitations. However, there are also others who go beyond the
social restrictions and create art for the pleasure of creating. It is
believed that through art the artist can create a change in society.
This is because art appeals to all senses of people.

Artisan

2
History of Artisan
artisan (from French: artisan, Italian: artigiano) is a skilled craft worker who makes or
creates material objects partly or entirely by hand. These objects may be functional or
strictly decorative, for example furniture, decorative art, sculpture, clothing, food items,
household items and tools and mechanisms.

Medieval artisans
During the Middle Ages, the term "artisan" was applied to those who made things or
provided services. It did not apply to unskilled manual labourers. Artisans were divided
into two distinct groups: those who operated their own businesses and those who did
not. Those who owned their businesses were called masters, while the latter were the
journeymen and apprentices.

ARTISAN Part 2
What is Artisan
An artisan is someone that works with their hands to create unique, functional and/or

decorative items using traditional techniques. Artisans are masters of their craft and
create products such as clothes, toys, tools or furnishings.

What’s the difference between an artisanal product and a handicraft?

artisans possess skills passed down from generations within their communities and
create products that uphold their tradition and are expressions of their culture.
Handicrafts can be self-taught or learned in a school. Handicrafts are not goods created
to communicate items of deep traditional or symbolic meaning, or follow an ideology,
express a cultural identity or the heritage of a society.

What are examples of artisan products?

Originally, artisans made products that they needed for their everyday activities in their
communities as there were no factories or shops around. As industrialization occurred,
most of artisanal products became decorative or special objects to be bought from the
people outside their communities

Stages in Production Process

3 The process of creating an artwork does not necessarily follow a linear progression. One of the
things that one must accept is the fact that the arts have anarchic dimension to it, allowing it
to fully harness its creative potential. The very reason why different art styles, periods, and
movements were made possible, is because there was a form of flexibility given to artist in
terms of how to conceptualize and execute their ideas into reality. But this does not mean
there is no guiding principle that governs the general process of art production.

1. PRE-PRODUCTION
The artist always begins with an idea that he wants to express or communicate with his
audience.
It may not necessarily be fully formulated, and so some form of exposure, research,
and their approaches may be explored to get the idea long before actually making the
artwork.

3 2. PRODUCTION
Some artist, however, birth their ideas when material manipulation is already underway. This
when preproduction sometimes seep into the production stage. The execution of the art
may take a variety of forms such as painting, sculpture, tapestry, photograph, film, a routine
(dance), or a track or composition (music).

3. POST - PRODUCTION
Once an artwork is finished, it will then be decided on how it will be circulated not only in the art
world, but the many publics. If the artist decides that he alone should see the work, then so be it. But
most of the time, if not always, the creation of the object requires that it be seen, heard, touched,
and/or experienced in a variety of ways.

Medium and Technique

4
Medium - refers to the materials that are used by an artist to create a
work of art. The plural for of medium is media. Without the medium, an
idea remains a concept, or it would just dwell in the walls of the artist’s
imagination. It is challenging to manipulate medium and transform it from
its raw state.

Technique - It refers to the artist’s ability and knowledge or technical

know-how in manipulating the medium. It is the manner by which the
artist controls the medium to achieve the desired effects; thus, it is in the
technique that artists differ from one another. Making an artwork
requires technical competence. The ability to manipulate is the driving
force in the birthing of a new form or idea.

exhibits
In general, an exhibition is a planned arrangement and
display of a collection of items. Actually, exhibitions usually
take place within museums, galleries, and exhibition halls, and
World’s fairs. Exhibition can include many things, such as art
in both major museums and smaller galleries, interpretive
exhibitions, natural history museums and history museums,
and also varieties, such as more commercially focused
exhibitions and trade fairs. The word “exhibition” is usually, but
not always, the word used for a collection of items made
available to an audience. The term “exhibit” generally refers to
a single item being shown within an exhibition.
