DISCOVERING THE
WORLD THROUGH
TRAVEL
SCOVERING THE WORLD THROUGH TRAVEL
Many centuries ago, people
took a walk or they used
animals for transport from on
country to another. Then they
traveled by boats or ships,
sailing over the oceans, seas,
lakes, or rivers.
SCOVERING THE WORLD THROUGH TRAVEL
Marco Polo, an Italian
traveler and merchant
informed the
European people about
the life and culture of
ancient Chinese
civilization.
SCOVERING THE WORLD THROUGH TRAVEL
The people of the South Pacific islands sailed in
small boats across the oceans to begin a new life on
the Hawaiian islands. Many European explorers
made contact possible between European people
and the people in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
SCOVERING THE WORLD THROUGH TRAVEL
On the other hand, the journeys of people between
different lands and regions have also caused much
suffering and destruction. Some countries in Europe
sent armies to conquer new lands and territories.
STUDYING THE WORLD
USING MAPS
The Mercator Projection Map
Some 400 years ago, a Flemish cartographer or map
maker, popularly known as “Mercator," created a
map that sailors find their way in the open seas of the
world. Mercator drew this map from the point of view
of European navigators.
Many scholars believe that the Mercator projection
map over- emphasizes Europe as the center of the
world, but European countries and cultures are
from only one part of the world. There are many
different countries and cultures in the world, each
deserving respect.
The Peters Projection Map
His projection map shows how the
round world is seen on a flat map.
This representation countries in
their proper places in the Northern
Hemisphere and Southern
Hemisphere.
The Peters Projection Map
The Peters Projection Map
In addition, the Peters projection map
represents the areas of countries and regions
more accurately. Therefore, the countries in the
Northern Hemisphere as a part of the world do
not appear bigger than the countries in the
Southern Hemisphere.
