CLIMATE

STUDY
Kolkata is the capital of West Bengal . Located on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, the city is
approximately 80 kilometres (50 mi) west of the border with Bangladesh.

It has hot and humid climate with temperatures mainly being around 25 – 30 degree celcius .

Rains brought by the Bay of Bengal branch of the south-west summer monsoon lash Kolkata between June
and September, supplying it with most of its annual rainfall of about 1,850 mm (73 in). The highest monthly
rainfall total occurs in July and August. In these months often incessant rain for days brings life to a stall for
the city dwellers.
highest temp in Kolkata was
41° C during June

Lowest temp of
around 11 ° C in
January
• Grey stripes show
comfortable temp
in summer and
winter
• No stark variation
in design of house
is needed .

Most temp of March – Sep are

above comfort level so it is hot to
pleasant most time of year so it
needs cooling.
Cold months of Jan and Dec as
mean temp is below comfort temp
Feb, Mar, Oct,Dec show max
variation in temp from 14°C
to 38 °C
• Most hours
from Dec to June
are above the comfort
level so we need to
cool the environment
with the help of A/C or
any other method
• A sun shade of 50 °
is required from south
and 65 ° to west to
protect from hot temp
• From June to
Dec more hours
are above
comfort lvl temp
• Very little hours
in <20 ° C
Comfortable region with apt
amount of heating and
humidity
Very High temp area with
moderate humidity. Cooling is
required through thermal massing
or air conditioning
High temp with high humidity.
Very uncomfortable. Cooling
and dehumidification is
required.
It can be done through A/C
Normal temp but high
humidity. Dehumidification is
necessary through
dehumidifiers or better
ventilation
Cool temp but normal humidity
humidity. Heating needed to be
increased by heaters etc and also
maybe humidification by adding
fountains ponds near house
max time of year the dry bulb temp are
very hot . From march to sept even the
nights are very hot .
A marron strip in mid April and
early June from 10am to 4pm
show the place is excruciatingly
hot and requires cooling
SUN PATH
• As Kolkata is a coastal
region and near to tropics
the sun path is mostly in
middle and not bent a lot
towards south which
means sun is present
most time of the day.
• During June and July sun
comes out as early as
5:30 and sets at 6:30-
7:00 so more heat gain
and suitable shading and
cooling is required
• During winters the sun is
pleasant . Sunrise at
6:30 – 7:00 and sunset at
5:30
