In art, it explains the

amount of degree of lightness

or darkness of a space or
region. It includes the strongest
darks and light.

Tonal Range
Tonal drawing is also applied
in painting. When white or black
are mixed with any color in the
color wheel, varieties of tones
( shades and tints ) will be
produced.

MELC TOPIC:
Enhance drawing using linear
mark.
TLE_ICTIL9- 12DP-IIIa-j-2
OBJECTIVES:
In this lesson you will learn the following:
1. Be familiar with the different
linear marks used in drawing;
2. Enhance drawing using linear
marks; and
3. Follow the procedure in
applying lines to enhance
drawing.
Below are the most commonly used linear
marks in drawing.
What is linear drawings?
Linear drawing is a technique that
uses lines in shading, rather than the
depth of color. Heavy lines are used to
emphasize darker values and light lines
for the light values. The light lines fade
as it reached the part of the figure
receiving the greatest amount of light.
Hatching
Hatching is the process of shading
using parallel lines. The closer the lines,
the darker the value. Hatching works
well with pen and ink, or with pencil.
You see it used a lot also in etchings and
printmaking.
Hatching Examples
Cross-Hatching

In cross-hatching, sets of parallel

lines intersect with each other in
particular angle to achieve shading
quality.
Cross-Hatching Examples
Contour Lines

In contour shading technique,

lines follow the contour or shape of
the object to make it more three-
dimensional. Lines may also cross
each other.

Stippling

Stippling is another technique that

makes use of dots rather than lines to
create a form. Closer dots produce dark
value in pointillism, they move apart as
they reach the highlight surface.
Stippling Examples
Pointillism is an incredible
drawing technique that allows you to
create a very detailed portrait with
only dots. Since you're using dots
instead of lines, you don't have to
worry about making someone look
overly wrinkled or drawing a line
wrong.
Pointillism or stippling is
the simple act of dotting ink
onto paper and in this lesson
we're going to use it to make a
beautiful portrait.

•Drawing pencil
•Rapidograph or
Micron pen.

Scumbling Lines

Scribbled lines layered

together make up shading in
scumbling technique. The lines
that are very fine are marked in
circular direction.
Scumbling Lines

Also sometimes called “brillo pad

technique” is a bit less controlled and
more random, and involves using your
pen or pencil to make lots of random,
squiggly marks to build up areas of
shadow.

Scumbling Examples
Blending/Smudging

Blending/Smudging is a technique of
shading that focuses less on specific
mark-making, and more on concealing
the application of marks by either
applying them seamlessly (such as by
creating
such smooth and closely-applied
shading with pencils that the hatching
becomes invisible), or by rubbing in
the media using a finger or smudging
tool. Blending can be done easily
enough with pencils, or with gradated
chalks. Charcoal is EXCELLENT for
smudging!

the brightest highlight.
