What is Analytics?
Analytics is the use of:
data,
information technology,
statistical analysis,
quantitative methods, and
mathematical or computer-based models
to help managers gain improved insight about
their business operations and make better,
fact-based decisions.
6

Application of Analytics
 Management of customer relationships
 Financial and marketing activities

 Supply chain management

 Human resource planning

 Pricing decisions

 Sport team game strategies

7

Scope of Analytics
 Descriptive analytics : uses data to
understand past and present

 Predictive analytics: analyzes past

performance to predict future

 Prescriptive analytics: uses

optimization techniques/best possible
course of action
8

Scope of Analytics
Example - Retail Markdown Decisions
Most department stores clear seasonal
inventory by reducing prices.
The question is:
When to reduce the price and by how much?
Descriptive Analytics: examine historical data
for similar products (prices, units sold, advertising,
…)
Predictive Analytics: predict sales based on
price
Prescriptive Analytics: find the best sets of
pricing and advertising to maximize sales revenue
9

Predictive Analytics
(Some more examples)
 Retail
• Pre-sale Area: Sales forecasting and market analysis, customer segmentation,
revisions to business models, aligning IT to business units, managing
inventory to account for seasonality and finding best retail locations
• Post-sale Area: Acting to reduce returns, get the customer to come back and
extend warranty sales.
 Health
 Sports
• Bing Predicts, a prediction system by Microsoft’s Bing search engine.
Scored 80 percentile for American Idol and went 15 for 15 in the 2014
World Cup. It used statistics and social media sentiment to make its
assessments.
 Weather
 Insurance/Risk Assessment
• analyze and estimate future losses, catch fraudulent claims, plan marketing
campaigns, and provide better insights into risk selection.
10

 Financial modeling
• help optimize the overall business strategy, revenue generation,
resource optimization, and generating sales.
• credit scoring system (credit rating) used to approve or deny loans,
often within minutes.
 Energy
• in power plants can reduce unexpected equipment failures by predicting
when a component might fail, thus helping reduce maintenance costs
and improve power availability
• Smart meters
 Social Media Analysis
• Tracking user comments on social media outlets enables companies to
gain immediate feedback and the chance to respond quickly
 Alerting and Monitoring
 Internet of Things
• IDC estimates less than 1 percent of data generated today is being
analyzed, and that flood will only increase as more IoT devices come
online, such as smart cars.
11

Prescriptive analytics (Some more examples)

Still an evolving technique and there are limited applications for it in
business.

Ex. Google's self-driving car

Scope of Analytics
13

Concerns of Analytics in Complex Situation

(3 Vs)
 Volume: the quantity of data
– Larger than the volume processed by conventional
relational database
– Benefits all descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive
– Benefits stochastic models as well
 Velocity: the rate at which data flows
– Prescriptive models run in the background and take data
from input to make an optimal or near optimal decision
 Variety: different data sources in different
formats
– The implementation of management science models
requires an additional layer to make the input data uniform
Big Data Analytics
14

The process of discovering patterns in large data

sets involving methods at the intersection of
machine learning, statistics, and database
systems.

Ex. Amazon recommendation

Data Mining
15

Communicating / Understanding

Data Visualization
16

Analytics – Life Cycle - Stages

17

Implementing Analytics
1. Understand the company’s products in depth
2. Establish tracking mechanisms to retrieve the data
about the products
3. Deploy good quality data throughout the enterprise
4. Apply real time analysis to the data
5. Use business intelligence to standardize reporting
6. Use more advanced analytics functions to discover
important patterns
7. Obtain insights to extract relevant knowledge from
the patterns
8. Make decisions to derive value using the knowledge
discovered
