PHONOLOGY AND PHONETICS
THE DEFINITION OF PHONOLOGY

 In linguistics, phonology is one of the studies of linguistics which

studies about the sounds of the language, both in language or
developed societies and language of a society that is still unpretentious
(primitive in all its aspects (Arifin,1979)

 The term of phonology comes from the word “phonology”, which is a

combination of the words “phone” and “logy”. The word “phone”
means “sounds of the language”, i.e vowels and consonants. And the
word “logy” means “science, method, and mind” (Hornby, 1974:627)

 Phonology has been defined as the study of sound systems that is the
study of how speech sounds structure and functions in languages.

 Phonology is that partv of language which comprises the systematic

and functional properties of sound in language.
THE SCOPE OF PHONOLOGY

PHONETICS PHONEMICS ( PHONOLOGY)

 Phonetics provides objectives ways of
describing and analyzing the range of sounds  Phonemic (phonology) is a part of phonology
humans in their language. that studies speech sounds according to their
function as a differentiator of meaning
 Phonetic knowledge does not develop alone
from other aspects of language knowledge but  Phonemic (phonology) is the study of sounds
develops simultaneously with aspects of and sound of pattern of a specific language.
semantic, syntatic, morphemic, and pragmatic
knowledge  Phonemic (phonology) is also the study of how
the sounds are organized and how they
 Articulatory phonetics identifies precisely function in a language
which speed organs and muscles are involved
in producing the different sound of the world’s
languages.
1. Phonetic is the study of the sound of parole
THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN 2. Phonetic studies usually explain sounds in the articulation,

acoustic, and perceptual dimensions
3. Phonetic is seen as an extragramatical language study.
4. Phonetic does not describe sounds as units that carry different
meanings or functions.
PHONETICS 5. Phonetic is often considered an inclusive science.
6. Phonetic is the study of language with regard to speech events,
pure, phenomenal to the sound of language without taking into
account function
7. Phonetic is called “lower level phonology”
8. Phonetic usually using a phonemic transcription called IPA
(International Phonetic Alphabet)

1. Phonology is the sound of langue

2. Phonology describes sound as an abstract language system
namely sound rules in the knowledge of the speaker
3. The study of phonology is seen as part of language
grammar
4. Sound is described as a unit that carries a different
PHONOLOGY meaning/function.
5. Phonology tends to be exclusive.
6. Phonology is the study of language which deals with the
language system and the study of linguistic function of
language.
7. Phonology is at the higher level
8. Phonology is transcribed by phonemic transcription.
