 Developed during the late 18th up
to early 19th centuries
 Returned to ‘classical’ modes
(Ancient Greek and Roman art)
 “neo” - new, recent, revived
 neo + classical = classical that
has been revived
Principles of Order and Reason
a. To keep the European Age of Enlightenment (17th and 18th
centuries).
b. A reaction against the ostentation of Baroque art and decorative
Rococo school
c. Stimulated by the rediscovery of Roman ruins at Herculaneum
and Pompeii
d. 1755 – publication of a book entitled “Thoughts on the Imitation
of Greek Work of Art” by Johann Winchelmann (German art
historian and scholar)

LIFE STORY
o At age of 9 – his father was killed in a duel.
o His mother left him
o He was raised by his two uncles. François Boucher
o Later on his uncle sent him to Francois Boucher –
leading painter of that time and a family friend.
o Then Boucher sent him to Joseph-Marie Vien – a
painter more in tune with the neoclassical reaction to
Rococo.
o At age of 18 – he enrolled at the Academie Royale
(Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture)
