The lived experiences

of the UC criminology
reviewees during the
pandemic.

Humms 3
Backround of the study

• The COVID pandemic has introduced an element of

randomness into our lives. It has created the largest
disruption of education systems in huma history, affecting
nearly 1.6 billion learners in more than 200 countries.
• Whereas preparing for a licensure examination has
become more stressful, and students frequently
experience exam anxiety; rational anxiety, and
irrational anxiety (India, 2020), contributing to the
rise in mental health needs (Mapoy, A.J., Labordo,
E.M., et.al.,2021)
The results of the study will be of a great benefit to the
following:

• The Board takers:The data or information provided in the

study will inform board takers on how to prepare for the
upcoming board exams.
• The Researchers:The data and information contained in the
study will assist the researchers how the pandemic affected
the reviewees in preparing for the board examination.
• The School Faculties: In terms of school faculty, this
study will be beneficial to them because the
information in this study will help them improve their
teaching style, which will essentially match the
students' capacity.
Statement of the Problem
1. What
are the lived experiences of UC criminology
reviewees during the pandemic?
2. What
are the challenges that the UC criminology
reviewees encounter during the pandemic?
3. Whatare the coping mechanism adopted by the
UC criminology reviewees?
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
• (Chee-Kiat Tan, 2021), the pandemic came suddenly
and stringent measures are imposed the decrease the
spread of the disease.

• (Pokhrel, 2020), the COVID pandemic has introduced an

element of randomness into our lives. The cancellation
of board exams without thinking through future
implications.
• (India, 2020), one of the most challenging
task brought by this pandemic is the review
for licensure examinations of fresh graduates
and including those whose examinations
were postponed. Mental health is a priority
when facing such challenges.
METHODOLOGY:
• This chapter presents the research design
population, locale of the study, data gathering
procedure, data gathering tools, data analysis, and
treatment of the study.
Research design

• The researchers will use a qualitative approach through

phenomenology , which will involve collecting, analyzing
and non numerical data provided by responses and
related literature, studios, theories and concepts that
are closely related to the research topic titled the “lived
experiences of UC criminology reviewees during the
pandemic.”
Population and locale of the study/ scope and limitation

• 11 participants are criminology reviewees from

Baguio City and la Trinidad, Benguet, more
precisely reviewees from the university of the
Cordilleras review center.
Sampling procedure

• The researcher used purposive sampling to select the

participants. According to Alchemer.com, purposive
sampling is a form of non-probability sampling in which
researchers rely on their own judgement when
choosing members of the population to participates in
their service.
Data Gathering Procedure
• The researchers sent letters to the Dean of College of Criminal
Justice Education requesting approval to use online platforms
and in-person interviews. Participants are provided with private
links via zoom and, if necessary, will conduct face to face
interviews in accordance with health protocols at the Hub Baguio
city. The interview will last approximately 20 to 30 minutes per
participants.
Data gathering tool

• Since the researchers are using a Qualitative

approach, the tools that will be used to collect
data are questionnaires, an interview guide and a
phone to record the interviews, all of which must
be fully transcribed verbatim.
Treatment of the study

• The research takes qualitative approach which means

that the collection methods are primarily focused on
gaining insights reasoning motivations so the research is
more in-depth.
• The process of data obtained through the questionnaire
the researcher utilize the following as thematic analysis.
RESULT AND DISCUSSION

A. LIVED EXPERIENCES OF PARTICIPANTS DURING THE PANDEMIC

A. 1. Stress as an Inevitable experience. Inevitable Experiences
are those experiences which are certain to happen and cannot be
avoided. Just how each participant suffers from stress in reviewing
during the pandemic outbreak. Stress as part of their being cannot
be avoided thus, it includes the effects on their physical, emotional,
mental and spiritual being brought by their experiences.
A. 2. Loss of Focus.  Inability to pay attention to discussions of
importance at home or at work (Urban Dictionary). According to
David Kolb (1984) of Experiential Theory, it is the process whereby
knowledge is created through the transformation of experience.
Knowledge results from the combinations of grasping and
transforming the experience. Wherein, for many students, having
classes online makes them easily distracted.
A. 3. Fear in the time of Pandemic. Fear is a normal
reaction to danger: it allows us to guide our choices and our
actions to avoid taking excessive risks for our health and our
lives. However, we know that not all human beings have the
same sensitivity to danger: some tend to underestimate it
and go ahead no matter the risk, while others are much
more reserved - some, even paralysed - by fear.
B. CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED BY THE PARTICIPANTS DURING

PANDEMIC
B. 1. Diverse Difficulties. Diverse is having a variety of individuals
and points of view being presented, it is a group of people who are
different in the same place and it represents the different types of
challenges that the reviewees encountered during the pandemic.
Through the effect of pandemic, education can be a struggle in
general when learning takes place in a virtual environment
B. 2.Dealing with Psychological Health. Psychological health involves
having mental, social, and emotional well-being.
Among the 11 participants, four(4) mentioned dealing with
Psychological health. Participant B and C stated that " depression
timaysa, isungahaankadapat ag maymaysa nu di ketmaki socialize ka
tapnomaiwasanti suicide”
C. COPING MECHANISM WITH THE CHALLENGES DURING THE
PANDEMIC
C. 1. Flexible Goal Setting. Is about adapting, developing our own
strategies for coping with and succeeding in the face of changing
circumstances in our lives. To be properly guided on our own goals, one
step to consider is creating a timetable. This will help us manage our time
wisely as well as finishing our tasks one step at a time.
C. 2. Coping strategies and situation controllability involves
cognitive and behavioral strategies that individuals employ to
deal with or control stressful circumstances, and can be
impacted by multiple biological and psychosocial factors
including physical health, personality, spirituality, and social
support (Finlay et al. 2021). Coping may involve the individual’s
effort to adjust in some kind of situation like the reviewing in the
time of pandemic.
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

CONCLUSION:
1. The board reviewees of the UC encountered and
overcame a variety of life challenges during the
pandemic.
2. The participants coping mechanisms exist between
themselves and their scope of thoughts and thinking.
3. Diverse difficulties represent the different
types of challenges that the reviewees
encountered during the pandemic and dealing
with psychological health involves having
mental, social, and emotional well-being
topped among the different challenges that
they encountered.
RECOMMENDATION:
1. Criminology examinees should be determined to prove
themselves by doing their absolute best to overcome any
barriers or challenges that arise in studying for the board exams.
2. Reviewees should make themselves and family as their prior
motivation to give their all during the review and board exam
3. The University should allow them to have face-to-
face intensive review for a month prior to the
examination following pandemic protocols, so that they
can clear their heads on the lesson they’ve gone over. In
order to learn well and pass the board examination
reviewees should strive their outmost and put in extra
efforts.
