What Is Art?
• Art consists of paintings, sculpture, and other pictures or objects which
are created for people to look at and admire or think deeply about.
• It is the activity or educational subject that consists of creating
paintings, sculptures, and other pictures or objects for people to look at
and admire or think deeply about.
• The arts are activities such as music, painting, literature, cinema, and
dance, which people can take part in for enjoyment, or to create works
which express serious meanings or ideas of beauty.
• Arts can also be a subject such as history, literature, or languages in
contrast to scientific subjects.

What Is Art?
• The beauty of arts is that is it subjective. Some may say an art work is a
masterpiece while others say it is mediocre.
• Just as the saying goes “one man’s stone is another man’s gem”
• The beauty of art refers to an interaction between line, color, texture,
sound, shape, motion, and size that is pleasing to the sense
• Art is not necessarily referring to “something” or to an action, it can
also refer to someone you love.
• Another thing about art is that it has a lot of forms. Meaning you
cannot base someone’s skills just by looking at one aspect of that
person.

What is Contemporary Art?
• Contemporary art is the term used for art of the present day. Usually
the artists are alive and still making work.
• Contemporary art is often about ideas and concerns, rather than solely
the aesthetic (the look of the work). Artists try different ways of
experimenting with ideas and materials.
• Contemporary artists use whatever they think illustrates their idea
most appropriately. Nowadays artists have many different methods
and materials to use. Some use painting and drawing but there is also
photography, sculpture, film, new media, live performance, light, sound
and installation.
