Layers of Symbolic Tools
(From 2000) Ubiquity, interconnection and animation
Cyberspace of cultural signs (software) in cyberspace. Socio-
semantic computation. Toward new signs systems.

Mass media (From 1500) massive technical self-reproduction and

diffusion of the alphabet and other cultural signs. New
languages (animated images, etc.) Scientific notation
progress.
Alphabet (From - 1000) Digitization and universalization of
writing reduced to thirty phonetic signs. Notation of
numbers by position, zero.
Writing (From - 3000) Autonomous technical memory of
language. Ideographic Signs. Numerals,
measurement units.
Orality (From - 300 000) myths, rites, oral transmission,
memory inscribed in matter. Icons. Arts of
memory.
Web n.0, Social Computing, Crowdsourcing : A Global Conversation ?

Yes, the digital conversation ! But what about semantic interoperability:

different languages, folksonomies, classifications, ontologies...?
From fragmented socio-semiotic computing to
reflexive collective intelligence
• Natural languages have evolved to be processed by
human brains, they are not fit for automatic computing
• We need a symbolic system - a semantic intellectual
technology - specially designed to take advantage of
massively interconnected computing power
• IEML : coordination system of an immense “semantic
space”, each “point” (Uniform Semantic Locator) being the
variable of a computable group of transformation.
• The semantic space could become a “mirror” (self-
reference) and a scientific observatory (computability,
measurability), of human collective intelligence, at any
scale and from any semantic viewpoint.
• By providing a universal space and semantic
computability, IEML could leverage a scientific revolution
in hermeneutic an social sciences.

The Metalanguage
• IEML is a finite regular language in Chomsky’s classification
• Definition of an IEML USL
– Set of primitives sequences (E, U, A, S, B, T)
– Each sequence of length 3L (0 ≥ L ≥ 5)
• There is a cryptographic quantity of IEML USLs
• Interpretability in natural languages
– Layers and compositionality: roots, words, phrases, paragraphs,
texts...
– Grammatical functions: subject, verb, object...
– Conjugations, cases, prepositions, adverbs...
• The multi-lingual IEML dictionary is built in such a way that the
semantic relationships between signifieds (concepts in natural
languages) are reflected into the syntactic relationships between
signifiers (IEML USL).
IEML Semantic Space: A Group of Transformations

Semantic transformation : Semantic Link

Origin Traversal Goal

• Automatic generation of semantic links between USLs from

the dictionnary
• Programmation, observation, mapping, navigation of semantic
networks, semantic paths, semantic currents....
• A new intellectual technology / symbolic system for inter-cloud
collective intelligence.
Cloud = distributed databases for socio-semiotic computing

IEML SEMANTIC SPACE

...computing semantic tags

semantic tag = name in cloud / XML-IEML USL

Technical proof of concept
(currently under construction)

• 1) Dictionary IEML / french / english / portugese,

managed by versavant topic-maps, open source in XML
• 2) IEML Parser and automatic translator in XML format
• 3) IEML-oriented customizable semantic database,
created and used through a browser.
• 4) semi-automatic translation tool of delicious tags into
IEML tags.
• 5) Python-based IEML semantic network construction
tool.
• Service-oriented architecture based on the exchange of
XML-IEML flows
• A semantic agent is a set of IEML services
