Alternating current
generator
AC generator is a device that converts mechanical
energy into electrical energy. It allows us to produce
electrical voltage by mechanically motoring an generator
The author of the patent for the alternating current
generator is Serbian inventor Nikola Tesla.
How an AC generator works

It is built of two main elements: Stator and Rotor.

Stator is the stationary part of machine whereas
rotor is rotating part. A prime mover is coupled to this
rotor to supply mechanical energy.
When the rotor of AC Generator is rotated by
prime-mover, the magnetic flux linkage with the
stationary armature winding changes. Due to this an emf
is induced in the armature winding. If load is connected,
an AC current starts flowing through the load due to the
induced emf.
Alternator for use in vehicles

An alternator is a type of electric

generator. Car manufacturers also uses these.
The battery is the most important part of
the electrical system in the car. Something has
to keep feeding the battery, or it will lose
voltage and fail to work. This job is left to the
charging system is the alternator. Alternators let
vehicles charge their batteries when you're
driving.
It converts mechanical energy into electrical
energy as the vehicle is driven and the wheels
turn. The battery charged in this way makes it
possible, most importantly, to start the car.
Asynchronous generators in the
aggregate.

Mobile power aggregates are often used in places remote from

the electrical system, such as forests, road works or in places where
there cannot be an interruption in energy delivery like hospital.
The mechanical part of the aggregate is the AC generator. It
converts the mechanical energy transmitted by the internal
combustion engine into electrical energy in the form of alternating
current. The running combustion engine rotates the rotor, which
causes the magnetic field to rotate simultaneously. The magnetic
field changes due to the fixed stator windings induce an emf in them.
Induction Generator as a Wind Power
Generator
Rotating electrical machines are commonly used in wind energy systems and
most of these electrical machines can function like generator.
There is energy locked in wind and their giant rotors can capture some of it and turn
it instantly into electricity.
The induction generator can be connected directly to the utility grid and driven by the
wind turbine rotor blades at variable wind speeds once it is brought on line from
stand still.
The amount of energy that a turbine makes is proportional to the
area that its rotor blades sweep out. The longer the rotor blades, the
more energy a turbine will generate. If the wind blows twice as
quickly, there's potentially eight times more energy available for a
turbine to harvest. That's because the energy in wind is proportional
to the cube of its speed.
Transformers
Transformers convert voltage from one value to another Many cell phones, laptops, and
small devices have a built-in transformer that changes the 230V AC voltage to the one the
device requires.

Transformers are also used at points in power distribution systems. Power is sent long
distances at high voltages, because less current is required for a given amount of power, and
this means less line loss. But high voltages pose greater hazards, so that transformers are
employed to produce lower voltage at the user’s location.
How a transformer works

The current flowing in the primary winding creates an

alternating magnetic field in the core. Due to the high
magnetic permeability of the core, this field spreads
throughout the core. The secondary winding is located in
this alternating magnetic field. As a result of the
phenomenon of electromagnetic induction, a voltage is
created in the secondary winding.
Chargers

Most of the small electronic appliances we use in

our homes work on relatively low voltages. That means
we generally need to use transformers to "step down"
the domestic voltage so it will safely power electronic
gadgets without blowing them up. Inside the charger, a
transformer "steps down" the electricity to a much lower
voltage. The low-voltage current then flows from the
charger into the battery in your appliance.
Some appliances have a built-in transformer inside
them and require no charger.
Electric toothbrush

When you stand the toothbrush on its charger, how does the
electricity flow from its plastic-coated base into the battery inside
the brush when plastic is an insulator?
There is a tansformer split into two pieces, with half the
transformer in the bottom of the toothbrush and the rest of it in the
charger base it stands on.
The primary coil is in the charger base and it has an iron peg on
top of it covered in plastic. The secondary coil is in the base of the
toothbrush, which you stand on the iron peg. It's the core that links
the primary and secondary coils together electromagnetically.
A charger that works like this is called an induction charger.
Wireless chargers

Wireless mat-type chargers are

induction chargers too. The mat works as
one part of a transformer , while the other
part of the transformer is either a circuit
embedded inside your device, a pad that
clips onto the back on your device, or, for a
cellphone, a replacement battery cover
with a built-in charging coil that connects
to the charging socket.
How does an induction cooktop work?

Inside the glass cooktop, there's an electronically controlled

coil of metal. When you turn on the power, you make a current flow
through the coil and it produces a magnetic field all around it and
directly above it.
Induction hob generates a constantly changing magnetic field. It
does not generate heat directly.
After standing suitable cooking pan on top of an induction cooktop,
the magnetic field produced by the cooktop penetrates the metal of
the pan.
That makes an electric current flow through the pan.
It's a an eddy current which lots of energy but nowhere to go. As it
swirls around inside the metal's crystalline structure, it dissipates its
energy. So the metal pan gets hot and heats up whatever food is
inside it.
Induction motor

An induction motor is an electrical

machine that converts electrical energy
into mechanical energy.
Induction motor is an AC electric
motor in which the electric current in
the rotor needed to produce torque is
obtained by electromagnetic induction
from the magnetic field of the stator
winding.
How an induction motor works

An induction motor is an electric motor that operates

on the principle of Induction. There are two parts of an
induction motor - Stator and Rotor. Stator is the stationary
part while rotor is free to rotate.
When current begins to flow in the stator winding,
magnetic flux begins to build up around it. Due to its
variable nature, this flux changes and, according to Farady's
law, an electromotive force is induced in the rotor winding.
Because the rotor winding is short-circuited, current
circulates in it, and when a current-carrying conductor is in
the magnetic field, a force acts on it and it begins to rotate.
