Alternating current
generator
AC generator is a device that converts mechanical
energy into electrical energy. It allows us to produce
electrical voltage by mechanically motoring an generator
The author of the patent for the alternating current
generator is Serbian inventor Nikola Tesla.
How an AC generator works
Transformers are also used at points in power distribution systems. Power is sent long
distances at high voltages, because less current is required for a given amount of power, and
this means less line loss. But high voltages pose greater hazards, so that transformers are
employed to produce lower voltage at the user’s location.
How a transformer works
When you stand the toothbrush on its charger, how does the
electricity flow from its plastic-coated base into the battery inside
the brush when plastic is an insulator?
There is a tansformer split into two pieces, with half the
transformer in the bottom of the toothbrush and the rest of it in the
charger base it stands on.
The primary coil is in the charger base and it has an iron peg on
top of it covered in plastic. The secondary coil is in the base of the
toothbrush, which you stand on the iron peg. It's the core that links
the primary and secondary coils together electromagnetically.
A charger that works like this is called an induction charger.
