Lesson 2

Importance of Science and

Technology and Its Impact
to Society

Prepared by:
Rina Monica V. Dizon, LPT
Objectives

• Recognize the importance of the advancement in science and

technology that revolutionized human lives.

ADD A FOOTER 2
Scientific research

• Comprises a wide variety of fields ranging from the

study of different branches of science to relatively
advanced fields like space exploration, human genetics,
and cloning.

• Aims to gain knowledge of the complexities in nature

and finding solutions to unsolved problems.

ADD A FOOTER 3
Scientific study

• Attempts to explore and understand the working of the

physical world.
• Tries to analyze the occurrences in nature and gain
knowledge about nature through experimentation.

ADD A FOOTER 4
Natural Sciences

• Deals with the study of nature

and human life.
• The studies of natural and
artificial science reveal the
relationship between nature and
human life.

ADD A FOOTER 5
Technological advancement

• Driven the developments in the

different modes of transport.
• Bicycles have transformed into
scooters and sport bikes.
• Four and six wheeled vehicles
have started running on the
thanks to the advancing
technology.

ADD A FOOTER 6
World Wide Web

• Information can be retrieved by means of search

engines.
• The information can be stored in an organized manner
and relevant information can be retrieved on supplying
search strings to web search engine.

ADD A FOOTER 7
• Digitization of information has been a major
breakthrough in the world of information technology.
• The mechanization of industrial processes has reduced
human effort.
• Machines have replaced human beings in monotonous
and risks-bearing tasks.

ADD A FOOTER 8
9
Some problems without technology could be

• Health aspects
• Standard education
• Availability of healthy food and safe drinking water
• Infrastructure

ADD A FOOTER 10
Under-development in the field of scientific research
and technology affects…

• Development of the country’s economy, infrastructure, higher

education
• Development of nuclear technology
• Development of satellites
• Biotechnology
• Meteorological science
• Space technology
• Nanotechnology
• Wireless communication
ADD A FOOTER 11
Importance of science and technology

• It helps us save time &

money
• Various objects and devices
like computers, modes of
transport, washing machines
or just anything else help us
save our times and money.

ADD A FOOTER 12
Importance of science and technology

• Education
• Science has given us
immense knowledge and
therefore, we have got
important matter to study.
• Technology has made
education itself easier.

ADD A FOOTER 13
Importance of science and technology

• Internet
• We get immense
knowledge and we also
get to stay connected
with our friends and
family.

ADD A FOOTER 14
Importance of science and technology

• Provides us devices or
comfortable sleeping, quick
cooking and fast commute
• With the help of objects like
A.C, microwave and vehicles,
science and technology have
made our sleeping, cooking,
and commute process easier
and faster, respectively.
ADD A FOOTER 15
Importance of science and technology

• It helps us a better life.

• Technology has benefitted us in
receiving those treatments
through various ways and
devices like X-ray, scan
machines, operation devices,
pacemaker and much more.
• Health apps, online doctors,
exercising equipment
ADD A FOOTER 16
The Concept of Science

“The observation, identification, description,

experimental investigation, and theoretical
explanation of natural phenomena”

- American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (2004)

ADD A FOOTER 17
The Concept of Science

“An ongoing theoretical dialogue with nature, in which

scientists have developed successively more powerful
models to account for a wider range of phenomena”

Snir, et al. (2003)

ADD A FOOTER 18
The Concept of Science

“Science is a way of understanding the world and human

interactions with it”

Cobern (1993)

ADD A FOOTER 19
The Concept of Science

“A human endeavor within which people try to make

sense of the environment and a worldview is built around
practices that purport to guide the individual towards a
personal understanding”

Watters and Diezmann (2003)

ADD A FOOTER 20
The Concept of Science

“An intellectual as well as a social activity carried out by

humans in their pursuit to have a better understanding of
the natural world”.

Gribbin (2003)

ADD A FOOTER 21
The Concept of Science

• Cajete (1997) defines science as a cultural as well as

individual process of thoughts,

• Bybee (1997) and Their and Daviss (2002) define

science in relation to scientific literacy that includes:
process, skills, concepts, and the ability to communicate
ideas based on reasons.

ADD A FOOTER 22
The Concept of Science

• It is a process of finding out and a system for organizing and

reporting discoveries (Lind, 1997).

• Science is also construed as a form of social language

developed by the scientific community (Scott, Asoko, and Leach
2007).

• The idea of social language was adapted from Bakhtin (1993).

23
How can science be defined?

1. It is an idea.
2. It is a personal and social activity.
3. It is a course or field of study.
4. It is an intellectual activity.

ADD A FOOTER 24
Scientific Revolution

• Commenced in early 16th century up to the 18th century in Europe

• Triggered by the invention of the printing machines that allowed

printing of books and other materials.

• Is an era of enlightenment and intellectualization that nurtured the

developments in the fields of mathematics, physics, astronomy, biology and
chemistry that changed the observation of society about the environment.
