Lecture 13
Preloading mode

Upon arrival upon drilling location

1. The rig leg is touched the sea bed

2. The body is jacked up in the air

3. Preloading starts after that

Preloading mode

additional ballast water are used to drive the

legs securely into the sea bottom so they will
not penetrate further while operations are
carried out
What is Preload Scheduling

 Surprisingly, I did not get the definition in

google, please do that for me

 Here, one by one, we need to fill up some tank

called preload tank to so that we can increase
the weight of the rig so that leg penetrates
into sea bottom.

 We need to be careful, that loads of all the leg

should be same during preloading.

 Name of those tanks are Preload tanks

preload Tanks
Auto and Manual Preload Scheduling

 It is only possible when soil condition is good

and uniform

 There will be no un-even soil condition or non-

homogeneous soil condition

 Otherwise Manual preload scheduling is

preffered
Preloading mode
Drilling mode

 After Preloading, drilling is started

 In this mode, the cantilever moves from the

stable location

 Drill floor also moves to desired location.

 Cantilever can only moves horizontally

 Drill floor can only moves in transversely

Storm mode

1. No Drilling

2. Cantilever and drill floor bring to stowed

position
The Different Load applied on Rig

Total Load

Variable Fixed

Movable Static

Solid Liquid
The Static Loads

 Hull Weight (Lightship)

 Cantilever and Sub-base

 Legs and Cans

 Drill Floor and Substructure

The Liquid Static Variable Loads
 Preload Tank

 Fuel Oil Tank

 Potable Water Tank

 Drill Water Tank

 Mud Tank

 Hull Miscellaneous Tank

The Solid Static Variable Loads
 Loads on Main Deck

 Store

 Accommodation

 Machinery

 Deck Pipe Rack

 Hull Miscellaneous
The Movable Variable Loads
 Loads on Cantilever Liquid Tank

 Cantilever Pipe rack and Misc. Loads

 Legs and Spud can Loads

 Drill Floor Misc. Loads

 Drill Floor Setback, hook load etc..
