INTRODUCTION
 What is it ???
 It is a device that extracts power from the tides.

 Rotor blades driven not by wind power but by tidal currents.

 Tides are produced due to gravitational pull of moon.

 This technology can help to power a small arctic village.

 World's first prototype tidal energy turbine was launched in Europe.

 USA first commercial hydrokinetic turbine Mississippi River near Hastings,

Minnesota on 22-12-2008.
NAME JUSTIFICATION
Why Underwater windmill ???
 Basically it is like putting a windmill in the water.

 It is also looking like a windmill and installed on the ocean floor and
large river bed.

MAIN PARTS
 Turbines

 Gearbox

 Generator

 Cables

 support

Fig 2. Parts of underwater windmill

PRINCIPAL OF OPERATION
 The hydrodynamic effect of the flowing water past the blades causes
the rotor to rotate.

 The electricity generated is transmitted to land through cables.

Fig 2 principal of operation

CONSTRUCTION
Three types of structures can be used:

1. Gravity structure
2. Piled structure
3. Floating structure

Fig 3. Gravity and Piled structure. Fig 4. Floating structure

Contd…,
Types of tidal turbine :

1. Horizontal Axis Turbine.

2. Vertical Axis Turbine.

3. Reciprocating Device (Oscillating Hydrofoil).

4. Venturi Effect Tidal Device.

Contd…,
1. Horizontal Axis Turbine :
 This work same as a conventional wind turbine and look very similar in design.

 The extractable energy depends in the rotor diameter and current speed.

 A prototype of 300 KW was installed in Kvalsund, south of Hammerfest, Norway in

2009 and connected to the grid on 13 NOV. 2003.

 THIS 300 KW horizontal axis turbine is also known as seaflow .

Fig 5. Horizontal axis turbine

Contd…,
2. Vertical Axis Turbine
 Direction of rotation is different compare to Horizontal Axis Turbine.

 Steam flow is perpendicular to the rotational axis.

Fig 6. Vertical axis turbine

Cont…
3. Reciprocating Device (Oscillating Hydrofoils)
 These are not having rotational blades.

 These have hydrofoils which move back and forth in a plane normal

to tidal stream.

Fig 7. Reciprocating device (Oscillating Hydrofoils)

Cont…
4. Venturi Effect Tidal Device.
 It use venturi effect to accelerate the water flow.

 A pressure reduction is generated in the most constricted point.

 Pressure gradient force is used to move a turbine inside the tube.

MAINTENANCE OF UNDERWATER WINDMILL

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT NEED FOR
UNDERWATER WINDMILL
 Reducing the manufacturing and operation cost.

 Increasing the reliability and survivability.

 Technology road mapping.

 Construction.

 Environmental impact.
ADVANTAGES

 Uses Tidal energy, it is clean and renewable source of energy.

 Have lesser impact on the environment.

 Low running cost.

 Long life with little maintenance.

 Reduces the dependence upon fossil fuel.

DISADVANTAGES
 Initial cost is too high.

 Very difficult to install.

 Blade must be coated to avoid corrosion.

 Special type material must have to be used for blade.

CONCLUSION
 Ocean energy can play a significant role in renewable energy portfolio.

 Right support and encouragement is needed.

 This technology helps to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

 There is need of much research for improvement and design of tidal current

turbine.
 It can be used at remote islands with strong tidal currents to produce
power.
