FOOD HABITS
FARIDKOT is a Royal and Historic City of Punjab and was once
the Capital Town of a Princely State of Punjab. Being a significant
district of Punjab, it is also well known for the delectable Punjabi
Cuisine Dishes.
Punjabi Cuisine is known for its rich, buttery flavours along with
extensive Vegetarian and Meat Dishes.
Some of the most mouth watering and delectable dishes of Punjabi
Cuisine are as follows :-
• Sarson Ka Saag and Makki Ki Roti
A Match made in Heaven, Sarson Ka Saag and Makki Ki Roti is just the
perfect example of a dish eaten daily in Punjabi households, particularly
in winters. It is a wholesome meal and is generally consumed along with
white butter or ghee, and Jaggery. This provides the body with all the
essential nutrients that are required during the winter season.

•Lassi : The Favourite Drink


Easily the most common drink all over Punjab and many parts of North
India, Lassi can win over the taste buds of anyone. Though a salty
version of it is also available, it cannot take place of the sweet one. It is
generally served in huge glasses and topped with cream or white butter
to make it rich.

buttery lentil meal. It is served in thick white gravy with platefuls of

comes to mind. Generally speaking, Punjabi food fits quite well into
vegetarian diet.

• Rajma Chawal
Rajma Chawal is a must-have in every North Indian Household and a
source of nostalgia for many. Even though it originated in Kashmir, it is a
favorite dish of many Indians especially Punjabis. This meal is usually
served with a side of pickled onions.
• Laddoo and Jalebi
It's not hidden from anyone that Punjabis have a
great liking for sweet dishes or desserts and are
famous for this fact in every corner of the world.
They believe that every meal of the day is
incomplete without having a dessert.

every age group. They are preferred in every
marriage functions and other occasions of
happiness.
• Butter Chicken
Butter Chicken is the favorite Punjabi meal of many people
that combines Chicken, spices, tomatoes and cream. It is also
known as 'The King of all Punjabi Dishes'. The juicy chicken
is served with Basmati Rice or Plain Naan.

• Panjiri
Panjiri is the most traditional Punjabi sweet dish among all
the Punjabi Sweet dishes. It is prepared with butter,
cardamom, sugar and almonds roasted in Flour. It is the
ideal winter treat to keep you warm. It is very famous in
Punjab and prepared by people in every winter season.
• Karah Prashad
Karah Prashad is made with whole wheat flour,
ghee and sugar. It is offered to all visitors at
Gurudwaras and has religious significance. It is
very delicious and loved by one and all. It is simple
but a divine sweet and is a blessing in itself. It is
distributed to all after Ardas signifying that all
humans are created equal.

The List of delicacies of Punjabi Cuisine doesn't finish here, it is a


Never Ending Series. The above mentioned dishes are merely some
examples from them.
DANCE
FORMS
FARIDKOT, being a part of Punjab, has similar Folk Dance
Forms like Punjab. The city of Faridkot actively participates in the
cultural activities. Every year in Faridkot, in the month of
September, a Cultural Fair is organized on the Eve of Agman
Purab of Baba Farid Ji, the holy Sufi Saint after whom the city is
named.
The exuberance and vitality of the people of Punjab is vigorously
displayed in their folk dance forms. In Punjab, there are different
dance forms for men women.

Some of the folk dance forms of Punjab are explained below :


Male Dance forms

1. BHANGRA
Bhangra is a type of Traditional Dance Form of Punjab, originating in
the Sialkot Region of Punjab. It is done in the season of Harvesting.
According to Manual, Bhangra is especially associated with the vernal
Vaisakhi Festival.
Bhangra is traditionally danced to the Dhol instrument, a large drum, and
Boliyan, short sets of lyrics that describe series or stories from Punjab.
These lyrics most commonly refer to themes of love, patriotism, strength
and celebration.
2. Jhummar
Jhummar Dance is a Folk Dance performed in the state of
Punjab in India. The term Jhummar is derived from Jhum or
Jhoom, which means Swaying. It is a very lively form of
dance which signifies happiness and is exclusively
performed by men. This graceful dance is quite popular in
weddings and other major occasions in Punjab.

3. Luddi
Luddi Dance is performed to celebrate victory, it is performed
basically by males. The steps are simple and slow. This dance has
an historical background and pertains to that moment in history
when Punjabi Sardars had begun to rescue Indian Women who
were taken to the Bazaars in Middle East.
4. Dhamal
This form of Dance is the most popular form of folk dance in the entire
state of Punjab. The people refer to this dance as Dhamal because of the
nature and enthusiastic performance of this dance. This dance is
accomplished by Punjabi males only. This dance is performed while
moving in a circle. The use of ghungroos is also common in this dance
form. This style of this dance is quite captivating.

5. Dhankara
Also called the Gatka Dance, this is a celebration dance. Two men each
holding colourful staves, dance around each other and tap their sticks
together in rhythm with the drums. This can also be called the Martial
Art of Nihang Singhs. Women also do this dance but they do so
separately and not in the company of men.
6. Malwai Giddha
Malwai Giddha is the folk dance of males of Malwa Region of
Punjab. This dance was originally performed by Babey (old men)
and hence is also called Babeyan Da Giddha but this dance is now
also performed by younger men. This includes teasing other people
in the form of Boliyaan (Folk Poetry).
The instruments used in Malwai Giddha are not merely for show. A
performer has to play them in rhythm and has to know not only how
to play that particular instrument but also the way to carry it. The
most common instruments used are Tumbi, Chimta and Kato.
Female Dance Forms
1. Giddha
Giddha is a popular Folk dance of women in the Punjab region. The
dance is often considered to be derived from the ancient dance
known as the Ring dance and is just as energetic as Bhangra, at the
same time it manages to creatively display feminine grace, elegance
and flexibility.
It is a highly colourful dance and is spread to all regions of India. Women
perform this dance mainly at festive or social occasions. The dance is
accompanied by rhythmic clapping with a typical traditional folk song
performed by the elder women in the background.
2. Sammi
Sammi is a traditional dance form originating from the tribal
communities of Punjab. This dance is very popular in the Punjab
region near Pakistan. Like Giddha, it is danced in a circle. The
dancers stand in a ring and swing their hands bringing them up
from the sides, right in front. No instrument is required as
accompaniment for this dance.

3. Kikkli
Kikkli is one of the folk dances of Punjabi female performed
by two girls holding hands and twirling each other in circle
and balancing their positions in circular motions. It is
generally popular in young girls and performed in pairs.
4. Jaago
Jaago is one of the best Punjabi dance forms performed during
weddings and other special occasions. Jaago is a Punjabi word
meaning 'wake up'. Just like its name, the dance form also attracts the
people when wedding celebrations are going on. Just one night before
the main wedding, the young girls of the family dance with lots of fun
and frolic. This dance form is ideal for weddings and performed by
females of the family.

All these dance forms signify that the people of Punjab are culturally very
active and have great recreational aptitude. These dance forms, in turn,
preach the qualities of brotherhood and compassion towards one another.
