INTRODUCTION:

 This lesson introduces us to the world of water resource

engineering and management. In this chapter, we will get to
know the vital role water resource engineers play in our society,
how water resource engineering become a key to solving real-
life problems on water supply and consumption, and how
important it is to practice proper water management.
Saguban, A.

Water Resources Engineering

▪ Is the study and management

of equipment, facilities, and
technique that are used to
manage and preserve life’s
most plentiful resource.
Saguban, A.

What does water resource engineer do?

 Water resource engineers may be tasked with

the awesome responsibility of ensuring that
the planning and management of available
water supply are adequately leveraged and
remain safe to use for as long as possible.
Saguban, A.

What are water resources?

 Water resources are origin of life that

are essentially required by humans,
and water is basically used for
agriculture, industry, domestic
purposes, and environmental events.
Saguban, A.

What is surface water?

 Study of surface water is an important field of

the water resources engineering. Water in a
wetland, lake or a river is called surface water,
and is lost by evaporation, seepage in sub-
surface and discharge to the oceans.
Saguban, A.

Major Functions of Water Resource Engineering

 deal with the provision of water for human, use and the
development of techniques for the prevention of destruction
from floods.

 Includes the planning and management of facilities that are

constructed for these tasks like making canals for irrigation
and sewers for drainage and to avoid waterlogging, and all
other issues related with the usage and control of water.
Saguban, A.
Saguban, A.

Other Functions of Water Resource Engineer

 Sewer systems for storms  Irrigation network  River engineering, including ice covered rivers.
and wastewater

 Hydraulic structures, including dams, spillways, floodways and reservoirs.

Saguban, A.

 Seepage control  Floods, flow of mud and debris

 Wave analysis
 Hydrology

What is Water
Resources
Management?
Zapanta, JD

Water Resources Management

▸ Is the process of planning,
developing, and managing
water resources.
Zapanta, JD

 drinking water and sanitation services

food production 

 irrigation

water-based recreational activities 

Zapanta, JD

 Responsible for managing water related risks:

 floods  drought  contamination

Zapanta, JD

How much water

resources do we
have?
Zapanta, JD
Zapanta, JD

Hydrological Cycle
▸ It is also known as hydrologic cycle or the
hydrological cycle.

▸ It is a biogeochemical cycle that describes

the continuous movement of water on,
above and below the surface of the Earth.
Zapanta, JD

3 ways to
manage water
resources
Zapanta, JD

1. By reducing waste and use:

Reducing overall population growth

 Devising more efficient industrial processes

with less use of water

controlling wastage
Zapanta, JD

2. By reducing degradation

 Devising methods for controlling or

reducing evaporation losses in irrigation

 Using better drainage in irrigated

agriculture to reduce soil salinization.
Zapanta, JD

3. By increasing supply

 Through storage in dams

 Controlling pollution and reclaiming

polluted water through recycling

 Desalinating sea water

Zapanta, JD

Dam
Dam does not only store water but also produces hydroelectric power.
Zapanta, JD

Process of generating hydro-electric power

Zapanta, JD

How can water be

distributed in our
society?
Zapanta, JD

Hydraulic Engineers

They will study the effect of

water and will provide
expertise and guidance on
projects related to water
supply, drainage system, and
flooding.
