Wind Instruments
Shepherd’s flute and Panflute
 These traditional
instruments come from
Romania and they are
hand made by various old
shepherds or craftsmen.
The panflute( the Flute of
Pan from the Greek
Mythology ) is made of
bamboo canes and the
shepherd’s flute of plum
tree wood.
 They are played by
folklore artists and have a
beautiful sound

The Bagpipes
 These are traditional
Scottish instruments. A
set of bagpipes consists
of some
enclosed reeds fed from
a constant reservoir of air
in the form of a bag. 
They are played
especially in the United
Kingdom of Great Britain,
in the Highland
Mountains of Scotland by
folkmen wearing tartan
costumes and kilts.

Didgeridoo
 This instrument comes
from Australia and it is
1,500 years old.
European didgeridoos are
made of bamboo, but the
native ones (used in
aboriginal ceremonies)
are from eucalyptus tree
and the hole inside is
made by termites. It is
played with continuously
vibrating lips to produce a
strange sound while
using a special circular
breathing technique

Quena flute and Tarka flute
 These wind instruments
come from Peru – South
America and they are
made of tubes of cane
bamboo or wood adorned
by carved rich paintings
in color. They feature 6
sound holes which
produce a range of notes
depending on how the
performer blows through
the flute.

Recorder ( Blockflute )
 The recorder or the
blockflute is an
European flute made
out of wood or plastic
and it has got 2 or 3
parts ( joints ) . It has
a nice mellow sound
and it can be often
accompanied by the
guitar .

Blues Harmonica
 The Blues harp appeared
in the United States of
America in the 20th
century and it is a
harmonica, also known
as a mouth harp or mouth
organ, a favour of many
blues musicians because
of its portability and
relative ease in learning
to play.

The Spanish Guitar
 This instrument is well-
known all over the world
and it originates from
Europe, Spain, being
used mainly for flamenco
music. The Spanish
version has got a wider
fret board, whereas the
Folk one is thinner and
bigger in size. They can
be used in many styles of
music.

Celtic Harp

 Also known as Irish harp


(Folk harp), it is a multi-
stringed instrument which
has the plane of its
strings positioned
perpendicularly to
the soundboard . All
harps have a neck,
a resonator and strings.
In antiquity, harps and the
closely related lyres were
often used in nearly all
cultures. The harp was
also predominant during
the medieval ages

Kalimba and Mbira
 These instruments are
also called thumb pianos
because they are played
with the fingers . They
originate from Africa and
they are made of metal
tiles and a resonator
wooden box. They are
often accompanied by
djembe drums or other
rhythmic instruments.

 These percussion instruments come from Turkey and Arabic


language countries and they are made of copper or
aluminium and have sheep, goat or fish skin for a good
quality sound, being used for the weddings and entertainment
purposes.

Djembe and Sabar drums
 The Djembe come from
Africa and they are rope-
tuned skin- covered
drums. The body ( or
shell ) is made of carved
wood and the drumhead
of untreated goatskin.
The djembe can produce
a wide variety of loud
sounds, making it one of
the most versatile drums.

Balafon ( Balaphone )
 It is a West African instrument , a gourd
resonated xylophone, a type of struck
idiophone. It is made of hard wood for
good resonance and sound.

 Maracas are simple
percussion instruments
usually played in pairs,
consisting of a dried gourd
shell or coconut shells filled
with seeds or dried beans. .
The Indians of Colombia and
Brazil used them 1,500 years
ago.  Castanets consist of a
pair of concave shells joined
on one edge by string. These

are held in the hand and used
to produce clicks for rhythmic

accents. They are
traditionally made in Spain.

Bongos, Tablas ,Udus, Hang
Drums
 The Bongos are made of
2 or 3 small wooden
drums. They are played
with the fingers while held
between the knees.The
tablas are the Indian
version of the bongos
whereas the Darabouka
is Turkish or Libanese.
 The hang drum is a
special instrument in the
shape of a UFO made of
steel.The udu is made of
clay.

Other Percussion Instruments
 There are many other
percussion
instruments like
different bells, the
tambourine, the
triangle , the wind
chimes, the agogos,
etc . They are used
for making the rhythm
and accents in music.
