Efficacy of Cotton

Candy Berry (Muntingia calabura)

in Lowering Blood Sugar

Researcher/s: Bartocillo, Amolo,

Eulalio, Linaza,
Introduction
Type 2 diabetes is spreading throughout both developed and developing
countries. Asia is starting to take shape as the pandemic's epicenter due to rapid
changes in population, migration, cuisine, and lifestyle trends. It may be more
challenging to effectively treat Type 2 diabetes in Asia due to different variation
(Abdullah, Attia, Oldmeadow, Scott, and Holliday, 2014). Type 2 diabetics are
referred regarded as having insulin resistance. Middle age and beyond are the age
groups most at risk for this type of diabetes. Earlier, it was referred to as adult-onset
diabetes. However, type 2 diabetes also affects children and adolescents as a result
of childhood obesity (Dansinger, 2020). In order to help persons with Type 2
diabetes lower their blood sugar levels, medicinal plants are therefore likely to be
studied.
Diabetes affects one out of every 10 Americans, or more than 37 million
people, and 90-95% of them having type 2 diabetes. Although type 2
diabetes is more common in people over 45, it is also more common in
children, teens, and young adults (cdc.gov, 2021). Currently diabetes
affects 8.8% of individuals aged one year and older (9.4% of males and
8.1% of women) in Canada, with 5.49 new cases reported every day.
Since 2000, the age-standardized prevalence rate has increased by 3.3%
each year on average. The case of diabetes is becoming increasingly
common in countries such as the United States of America and Canada.
The incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in the Philippines is low, at 0.91
percent, according to a recent assessment on children with T2D. By 2030, it
is predicted that 7.8 million Filipinos will have diabetes, indicating an
increase in the prevalence of the condition(Mohan,2019). Some people in
the Philippines believe that a certain plant can cure one diseases just like
tawa tawa (Euphorbia hirta) can cure asthma and cold Mansantas, West
Indian cherry or Cotton Candy Berry (Muntigia calabura) have been found
to have medical properties that may help in lowering blood sugar. Thus, a
study for its medicinal properties is needed.
State of the Problem
This study will determine the efficacy of cotton candy berry
(Muntingiacalabura) in lowering blood sugar.
This study will specifically answer the following questions:

1. What are the glucose level of mouse before and after intaking M. calabura?

2. How does M. calabura affect the glucose level of mouse?

3. Is M. calabura undeniably effective in lowering blood sugar levels?

Scope and Delimitation

This study will determine the efficacy of cotton candy berry

(Muntingia calabura) in lowering blood sugar levels. The
experiment will be conducted at Eulalio’s residence located at
Purok Mabuhay Baranggay Silway-8, Polomolok, South
Cotabato in the month of Octover 2020. This study points the
relationship of cotton candy berry (Muntingia calabura) in
lowering glocuse level in mouse.
10 male mouse will intake M. calabura and it will be under

observation for 48 hours. In addition, this study will determine

the glucose level of each mice before and after intaking M.

calabura. Data will be collected using the glucose test which may

use common instruments such as 70% of EtOH (ethanol),

glucose meter, testin strip, surgical scissors and tissue paper.

Significance of the Study

This study determined the efficacy of Cotton Candy Berry (Muntingia

calabura) jn lowering blood sugar and has significance to the following:

To the Department of Health (DOH) in the Philippines, this study may use as the
ndation for na advocacy effort to prioritize the use of locally available medical fruits in
moting and improving the quality of life for Filipinos.
To the Patient with high blood sugar levels, this study may help patients with high
od sugar cure or reduce their blood sugar levels.
To the community of the Baranggay Silway-8, Polomolok, South Cotabato, this

study may use as a way to reduce the diabetes rate in the community.

To the physician/scientists, this study may use as the foundation to create a cure

for the well-known disease called diabetes.

To the future researcher, this study may contribute to a greater understanding of

the effectiveness of Cotton Candy Berry (Muntingia calabura) in decreasing

blood sugar level. Additionally, it may serve as additional data for their research.
