referred to as 'Thomasians'.
• Founded on April 28, 1611 by the Spanish
friar Miguel de Benavides.
• is a private, Catholic research university in
Manila.

like attending their extra-
curricular activities and

• after he graduated from Ateneo, he had to go to University of Santo
Tomas for higher studies.
• the Bachelor of Arts in Spanish era was equivalent to high school and
junior high school today .
• Donya Teodora was not happy and tried to stop the idea of Rizal going
to study in UST after the tragedy happened to the GomBurZa
• Rizal enrolled on April 1877, when he was then 16 years of age.
• enrolled in the course of Philosophy and Letter for the reason that his
father liked it and he was not yet sure about what course he would take.
• taking advices from Fr. Pablo Ramon, director in Ateneo
• on his 1st year term (1877-78) he studied 4 subjects namely (1)
Cosmology, (2) Mataphysics, (3)Theodicy, (4) History of Philosphy
• 1878-79 was able to received the advice from Fr. Pablo Rector that he
should study medicine
• and another reason for him to study, specifically medicine, is to cure his
mothers' growing blindness.

• Rizal had so many romances with other
girls
• was a romantic dreamer who liked to sip the
"nectar of love"
• and was his first experienced of Spanish
brutality
• won the poetry contest
• champion of the Filipino student

affection, is literally the girl-next-door.

was obsolete and repressive.

HIS SAD EXPERIENCES

• In his novel (El Fili) he described how Filipinos

were badly treated inside the campus, such as
they were humiliated and insulted by their
Domincan Professor.

• due to the unhealthy relationship with the

professor the great and genuis Rizal was failed to
win high scholastic honors .

• due to his bad experiences in UST, Rizal then
decided to study abroad.
• after finishing his 4rth yr couse. Rizal decided
to study in Spain.
• he did not informed his parents about the
decision he made, especially Leonora
• professors in spain are more liberal that those
professors in UST.
