BRIEF OVERVIEW

● Aerodynamics, as the name suggests is the study of motion of air

& its effects on the
● Aerodynamic analysis is done in order to:
○ Reduce the weight of the car
○ Decrease the battery consumption
○ Reduce external forces such as the drag force and also the
coefficient of drag
○ Give an aesthetic appeal to the body

MATERIAL SELECTION

● Material selection is the act of choosing the material best suited to achieve the
requirements of a given application.
● For the cars, various materials can be selected like steel, aluminium, glass etc.
for different components.
● The two materials shortlisted for the vehicle body because of their wide
availability were Steel and Aluminium.

ALUMINIUM STEEL

Resistant to corrosion and rusting Not corrosion resistant and rusting

occurs easily
A soft metal with relatively a low density A hard metal alloy with a high density

Light-weighted metal Has a higher weight

THE FOLLOWING MATERIALS ARE SUGGESTED FOR THE VEHICLE
BODY AS WELL AS SOME COMPONENTS:-

● 5083 Aluminium - For Vehicle Body

■ Density- 2650 kg/m3; Tensile Strength- 275 to 380 MPa; Hardness- 75HB
○ It is a light weight material.
○ corrosion resistant.
○ Used in most passenger cars.
● Tempered Glass - For Front Windshield
● Laminated Glass - For windows and Rear Windshield
● Other material considered -
○ Composites
■ Composites are much more better materials as compared to Steel and
Aluminium.
■ But since Composites are almost 20 times expensive as compared to
Aluminium.

TYRES AND WHEELS

Alloy wheels are used instead of stainless steel wheels because:-

1. They are lighter in weight due to which they possess low

un-sprung mass.
2.Better brake cooling capacity.
3.Good aesthetics.
