Mga Likas Na Yaman NG Asya Silangan Kanluran at Timog Silangang Asya
Born on April 19, 1849 to a wealthy and prominent family in Vigan, Florentino was the first Filipina
poetess who established fame in the Philippines and in Europe. Her exquisite poems in Spanish and
in Iloko were exhibited in the Exposicion General de Filipinas in Madrid (1887) and in the
Internacional Exposicion in Paris (1889), where they attracted wide attention and won fame for her
country and herself.
In recognition of her literary ability, she was included in the Encyclopedia Internationale des
Oeuvres des Femmes (International Encyclopedia of Women’s Works) which was edited by Madame
Andzia Wolkska in 1889. The young Florentino's intelligence and lyricism was obvious at an early age
when she began to write her first verses in Ilocano. Although bared from receiving university
education because of her gender at that time, Florentino improved her mind by voracious reading of
books. A learned Ilokano priest, Father Evaristo Abaya, curate of Vigan, taught her advance Spanish
and encouraged her to write poetry. She was married to Elias de los Reyes, who, at one time,
served as alcalde mayor of the province. Five children born to them, the eldest of whom was
Isabelo de los Reyes, who later became distinguished man– of-letters, civic leader, and senator. Her
memory is now preserved by a monument and a street in Vigan, and immortalized by the pens of
historians and biographers.
On October 5, 1923, the Boy Scouts of the Philippines, was formally established as a branch of the Boy Scout
of America (BSA). The Manila council of the BSA, was initially funded through the help of various civic-
organizations namely: the YMCA, Knights of Columbus, Masons, Elks, Filipino and Chinese Chambers of
Commerce, the U.S. Army, the Catholic and Protestant churches, and the American Legion. Scouting history
in the Philippines traces back to the American occupation of the islands. The boy scouts first documented
formation of a scout troop in the islands was that of the Lorillard Spencer's troop of Zamboanga formed in
1914 by a U.S. Navy Lieutenant named Sherman Kiser.
This is just seven years after Lord Baden-Powell founded Scouting in England in 1907 and four years after the
establishment of the Boy Scouts of America in 1910. Lt. Kiser got the idea of putting up a boy scout in the
Philippines upon the suggestion of American charity worker Caroline Spencer of whom he was initially assigned
to escort in Sulu. Mrs. Spencer saw how Filipino boys could benefit from scouting and discussed her ideas with
Kiser. She actually shared the idea to organize boy scouts troop in the Philippines since her son, Lorillard
Spencer, was an active scout in the United States, hence became the name of the troop. Although Kiser was
reassigned to Zamboanga, he still formed a Scout troop composed of young Muslim boys. Upon learning of the
formation of a new troop, Mrs. Spencer sent monetary support to purchase uniform and construct a
headquarters. Realizing the benefits that Scouting was bringing to the boys, Assemblyman Tomas Confesor of
Iloilo sponsored a bill in the National Assembly providing for the establishment of the Boy Scouts of the
Philippines to replace the Boy Scout of America. The bill was signed into law as Commonwealth Act No. 111
by President Manuel L. Quezon on October 31, 1936, thus marking the month of October as Scouting Month.
Hence, it was formally established on January 1, 1938, and recognized on October 1, 1946, by the Boy Scouts
World Bureau.
On October 6, 1896, Dr. Jose Rizal was taken from Montjuich castle (Castell de
Montjuïc) in Montjuich, Barcelona, Spain, to sail back to the Philippines where he
faced trial and his eventual execution on December of the same year. He was given
a second class cabin and was held incommunicado in the ship Colon.
This happened after Rizal had been arrested while on his way to Cuba, where he
was volunteering for a medical mission. The Montjuic Castle is a fortress atop a
hill in Montjuich , Barcelona, which many years ago served as a military prison. In
Barcelona, the castle is particularly remembered as a site where important
dissident-free thinkers were detained and executed. In order to highlight and
honor freedom fighters and free thinkers who had a connection with the fortress,
in April 2011, Rizal was honored with the inauguration of the “Sala José Rizal”
room at the Montjuic Castle by the City of Barcelona.

On October 6, 1913, Francis Burton Harrison assumed office as American governor-general of the
Philippines. He stayed in office until 1921. A vigorous anti-imperialist and opponent of "Dollar Diplomacy",
Harrison was appointed by President Woodrow Wilson, and was tasked to ameliorate the United States
governance of the Philippines. Harrison declared the Democratic Party's intention to seek independence for
the Philippines and locally introduced a number of reforms that brought more Filipinos into responsible
administrative positions and added other elements of self-government. After the defeat of the Democratic
Party in the United States in 1920, Harrison lived outside the US, on an estate in Scotland and at resorts on
the Mediterranean. In 1935, Harrison returned to the Philippines and became a "presidential adviser" of
President Manuel L. Quezon and served the Philippine government-in-exile in Washington, D.C., during World
War II. After the war, he again served as special adviser to the first three presidents of the independent
Republic of the Philippines. He wrote Cornerstone of Philippine Independence in 1922 and, the Origins of the
Philippine Republic: Extracts from the Diaries and Records of Francis Burton Harrison published in 1974.
In his last years, 1950 to 1956, Harrison and his sixth wife lived secluded in Spain. Harrison died on
November 21, 1957 at Hunterdon Medical Center in Raritan Township near Flemington, New Jersey. He
willed that he be buried in the Philippines so his corpse was shipped back from the United States. He was
given state funeral and was interred in the Manila North Cemetery in La Loma, Manila. Harrison was born
Dec. 18, 1873, in New York City into a wealthy and prominent family. His father was a successful New York
lawyer who had been a private secretary to Jefferson Davis, and his mother was a well-known Virginia-born
novelist.
