PLANTS AND

THEIR HABITAT
BY: RHEA MAE PEREZ
WHAT IS ENVIRONMENT?

Plants and animals live together in many different

environments all around the world.
An environment is all the living and nonliving
things in a place.
What is a habitat?
The place where an animal or plant lives and
grows is called its habitat.
Different Land Habitats

Desert
Tundra
Rainforest
Grasslands
Forest
Desert Habitats
A desert is a very warm place. The
air is very hot and dry. There is very
little rain. The soil is very sandy.
Most animals that live in the desert
sleep during the day because it is too
hot. They come out at night to eat.
They are called nocturnal.
Rain Forest Habitats
A rain forest is an
environment where rain
falls almost every day. A
rain forest has warm
weather all year round.
Forest Habitats
A forest is an
environment that gets
enough rain and warm
temperatures for lots of
trees to grow.
Plants in different
habitats
Adaptation of plants to
dry habitats
The stem
- May be covered with a waxy layer to reduce
loss of water by transpiration for example the
cactus plant
The leaves
- The leaves may be reduced to thorns or spines
to reduce loss of water by transpiration.
The roots
- They have long roots that grow deep into the
ground to get the ground water that is trapped
far deep into the earth.
Adaptation of plants in
wet areas or habitats
The leaves
- They are broad and flat to help the plants to get rid of too much
water by transpiration.
The roots
- The roots have no root hairs since they do not need the root hairs to
absorb water, which they can even take in through any part of the
plant.

The stem
- The stems are long and flexible to allow them to bend easily
without breaking when pushed to and fro by water currents or water
waves.
Adaptations of plants to
their environment
- Plants
grow and survive in different
environments.
- Some plants grow well in dry areas
while others grow well in wet areas.
Adaptations to dry
environment
- A dry environment is characterized by:
• little rainfall.
• too much sunshine.
• high temperatures.
Examples of dry areas include arid and semi-arid
areas.
