Social Responsibility

The Economic Dimension, The legal Dimension, The Ethical Dimension, the Philanthropic Dimension
Social responsibility

• Being social responsible means that people and organizations must

behave ethically and with sensitivity toward social , cultural,
economic and environmental issues.

• Social responsibility is an ethical framework and suggests that an

entity, be it an organization or individual, has an obligation to act
for the benefit of society at large.

• Social responsibility is a duty every individual has to perform so as

to maintain a balance between the economy and the ecosystems.
Social Responsibility of Engineer

• Social responsibility of Engineering profession is commitment to

place public safety and interest ahead of all considerations.
• It means that engineer takes into account and show due regard for
the consequences of their conduct for wellbeing of others as well
as the impact of their work on society
Kinds of Social Responsibility

• There are four kind of social

responsibility
1. The Economic Dimension
2. The legal Dimension
3. The Ethical Dimension
4. The Philanthropic Dimension
Archi Carrol about CSR

• Four-part model of corporate

social responsibility (CSR)is
proposed by Archi Carrol.
According to this:
• “Corporate social responsibility
encompasses the economic,
legal, ethical, and philanthropic
expectations placed on
organizations by society at a
given point in time.”
Economical Dimensions

• How resources for the production of goods and services are

distributed within the social system.
• Consumers always favor social responsible companies or they most
enamored with companies that maximize profits.
Economic Dimensions

• This is the main responsibility upon which other responsibility relies.

Every economic activity in the organization should be profitable
enough to provide good return on investment to investors or owners.
• A corporation has to meet its economic responsibility in terms of
reasonable return to its investors, fair compensation to employees,
goods at fair prices to customers, etc.
• Thus meeting economic responsibility is the first layer of responsibility
and also the basis for subseqenent responsibilities.
• The fact remains that meeting economic responsibility is must for all
corporations to survive in the time.
Economics Dimensions

• Examples of economics dimensions are:

1. Contribute toward economic development
2. Preserving profitability
3. Reducing the cost of doing business through rigorous integrity
policies
4. Increasing a productivity through motivated workforce
Ethical Dimension

• Behaviors and activities that are expected or prohibited by

organization members , the community, and society (not codified
into law)

• Standards, norms, or expectations that reflect the concern of

major stakeholder.
Ethical Dimensions [1]

• This includes the standards and principles determined by the public, government
regulators and stakeholders, consumers and organization .
• These responsibilities refer to obligations which are right, just, and fair to be met
by corporations.
• Just abiding by law, procedure, and rule and regulations does not make business
conduct always as ethical or good.
• The conduct of corporations that go beyond law and contribute to social well being
is called ethical
Ethical Dimensions

•  Ethical responsibilities consist of what is generally expected by

society from corporations over and above economic and legal
expectations.
• The services provided by engineers require honesty, impartiality,
fairness, and equity, and must be dedicated to the protection of
the public health, safety, and welfare
•  Corporations have an ethical responsibility to do, even going
beyond law and rule and regulations, what proves good for the
society
Ethical responsibilities

• HONESTY. ...
• INTEGRITY. ...
• PROMISE-KEEPING & TRUSTWORTHINESS. ...
• LOYALTY. ...
• FAIRNESS. ...
• CONCERN FOR OTHERS. ...
• RESPECT FOR OTHERS. ...
• LAW ABIDING
Ethical dimensions for Engineer
•  Engineers shall issue public statements only in an objective and
truthful manner.
•  Engineers shall act in professional matters for each employer or
client as faithful agents or trustees , and shall avoid conflicts of
interest.
• Engineers shall perform services only in areas of their competence
• Avoidance of Building Places for Committing Vices
• Helping the poor
• Avoidance of bridbery

Legal Dimensions [1]

• All the social responsibility activities are expected to be fair and

legal. Everyone is expected to obey the laws and regulations set
as per the company standard.
• The legal responsibility of engineering demands that engineer
should abide by the rules and standard of workplace.
• Laws are the codification of do’s and don’ts do’s in the society.
• Abiding by laws is the prerequisite for any corporation to be
socially responsible.
Legal dimensions

Refers to obeying government laws and regulations.

Civil law:
rights and duties of individuals and organizations.
Criminal law:
prohibits specific act and impose fines/imprisonment as punishment
for breaking the law.
The Philanthropic Dimension [1]

• This social responsibility is to promote good will or human welfare.

For example by being a good corporate citizen or contributing the
resources to the community.
• The Greek word ‘philanthropy’ means literally ‘the love of the
fellow human.’
• The use of this idea in business context incorporates activities that
are, of course, within the corporation’s discretion to improve the
quality of life of employees, local communities, and ultimately
society at large.
The Philanthropic Dimensions

• Examples of The Philanthropic Dimensions are:

1. Making donations to charitable institutions
2. building of recreational facilities for employees and their
families
3. support for educational institutions
4. supporting art and support activities.

It is important to note that the philanthropic activities are desires

of corporations, not expected by the society.
