Subject-Verb Agreement
Subject-Verb Agreement is essential to
make sure that a sentence is grammatically
correct. Thus, the following basic rules can
help you to master subject-verb agreement.

RULE 1:
A singular subject must take a singular
verb, and a plural subject must
take a plural verb.
EXAMPLE:
•My son greets all the elders who visit
our house.
•The children help their mother to do
some errands.
•The city provides educational
gadgets for the affected learners and
teachers.
RULE 2:
When two subjects are joined by
‘and’, the verb is plural.
EXAMPLE:
•My friend and her brother visit
the church.
•The church and the orphanage
open their doors for the needs
•The teachers and the students
give a donation to the lahar victims.
RULE 3:
The verb is singular if the two
subjects separated by and refer to
the same
person or thing.
EXAMPLE:
•Red beans and rice is my mom's
favorite dish.
•Our secretary and treasurer is Mr.
Raul De Ocampo
•Wear and tear has to be expected
when you're in the rental business.
RULE 4:
If the subjects are both plural and
are connected by the words or, nor,
neither/nor, either/or, and not
only/but also, the verb is plural.
EXAMPLE:
•Neither the cats nor the dogs
chase the sick squirrel.
•Neither the snakes nor the lions
have escaped from the zoo.
•Either the Americans or Asians
help the victims of the earthquake.
RULE 5:
If one subject is singular and one plural and
the words are connected by
the words or, nor, neither/nor, either/or, and
not only/but also, you use the verb
form of the subject that is nearest the verb.
EXAMPLE:
•Either your sisters or your
brother wants any pizza.
•Either the officer or the members
realize their worth.
•Neither of the community leader
nor the residents show disrespect.
RULE 6:
Indefinite pronouns (everyone,
each one, someone, somebody,
no one,
nobody, anyone, anybody, etc.) are
always singular.
EXAMPLE:
•Everyone in the hall keeps silent
while someone is talking.
•Nobody is allowed to show
rudeness against the teacher.
•Someone files a petition in favor
of the poor.
RULE 7:
Indefinite pronouns (everyone,
each one, someone, somebody,
no one,
nobody, anyone, anybody, etc.) are
always singular.
EXAMPLE:
•Everyone in the hall keeps silent

rudeness against the teacher.

RULE 7:
If connectives like along with, together
with, as well as, accompanied by,
etc. are used to combine two subjects,
the verb agrees with the subject
mentioned
first.
EXAMPLE:

•All members of the faculty with their


families spend a night in the resort.
•Mr. Alvin Aquino accompanied by his
wife Teresita vanishes to the forest.
•The director, together with his staff,
visits the evacuation center to give
help.
RULE 8:
Collective nouns like herd,
senate, class, crowd, etc. usually
take a
singular verb form.
EXAMPLE:

•The herd is rushing to the


river.
•The crowd cheers for the best
performer.
•The ant colony survives the
