WHAT IS SCULPTURE?
ETYMOLOGY
• “Sculpture” comes from the Latin word “sculpere” meaning is to carve.
• Which also means to cut or remove pieces with a stone.
DEFINITION
• Is an artistic form in which hard or plastic materials are worked into three-dimensional art objects. 

• 1 : the action or art of making statues by carving or chiseling (as in wood or stone), by modeling
(as in clay), or by casting (as in melted metal)
WHAT ARE THE METHODS
OF SCULPTURE?
METHODS OF SCULPTING
• CARVING
is a subtractive sculpting technique in which the sculptor chips away from the chosen material.

• MODELING
is an additive sculpting where it uses pliable materials such as clay or wax wherethe artist shapes the material to
make a form.

• CASTING
Is an additive sculpting that uses liquid materials , where it is poured and molded to
create a form.

• CONSTRUCTION
• Is also an additive sculpting where forms are built from
such as wood, paper, string, sheet metal,
and wire.
CARVING MODELING
-Can be done by hands ir with - Can be done by hands or
power tools with power tools
-Uses stone, plaster, wood, ivory, - Uses pliable materials such

CASTING CONSTRUCTION
- Uses molding material -Can be done by welding, gluing,

FULL ROUND
SCULPTURE
• The term full round in the context of sculpture
refers to the works which can be viewed from
all sides.

• It requires an artist to take consideration

RELIEF
SCULPTURE
• Is a technique where the sculpted elements
remain attached to a solid background of the
same material.

• The term relief is from the Latin verb relevo,


meaning is to raise.
LINEAR
SCULPTURE
• By depicting or creating lines, one can
suggest the presence of one more planes.
When materialized, resulting into a linear
form and can become sculpture.

• A line can indicate movement or direction.


KINETIC
SCULPTURE
• Is an art from any medium that
contains movement perceivable by the
viewer or denpends on the motion for
its effect.

• A kind of structure where the parts or


certain parts are/is movable.
ASSEMBLAGE
SCULPTURE
• With the word “assembly”, Assemblage is a
form of sculpture comprised of found objects
arranged in a way that they created a piece.

• This materials/objects can be anything


organic or man-made.
