Present Perfect
Usage
We use the present perfect to talk about past actions that are relevant in the present.

Unlike the past simple, we do not use time signifiers of completed time to refer to present perfect actions.

James went to the gym an hour ago.

James has gone to the gym.

Mary was at the swimming pool this morning.

Mary has been to the swimming pool.

Matt bought a new treadmill last weekend.

Matt has bought a new treadmill.

Present Perfect
Form
While present perfect and past simple actions both refer to actions that happened in the past, present perfect
actions focus on the result or outcome of the action, while the past simple action refers to when the action
happened.

Carl did some exercise two hours ago, and now he feels tired.

Carl has done some exercise, and now he feels tired.

Sarah lost her gym membership card yesterday.

Sarah has lost her gym membership card.

Mike hurt his back while working out last week.

Mike has hurt his back.

Martes, 2 de febrero de 20XX Ejemplo de Texto de pie de página 15

Present Perfect
Form
The present perfect is made up of two verbs: the auxiliary verb ‘have’ and the main verb ‘past participle’.

The auxiliary verb is finite and changes to ‘has’ to indicate the third person. Also it is conjugated in the
present to show that the verb is in the present tense (even though it refers to a past action).

The main verb is non-finite and does not change regardless of the subject or tense.

Tom has been to the swimming pool twice this week.

The mayor of Oldbury has opened a new swimming pool.

Manchester United have won the league title 20 times.

Sandra has eaten some leafy green vegetables.

Martes, 2 de febrero de 20XX Ejemplo de Texto de pie de página 16

Present Perfect
Other uses
We can use the present perfect to express how many times we have done something.

Jacob has scored a goal ten times this season.

Kelly has been to the gym four times this week.

We can also use the present perfect to talk about how long (until now) we have been doing an action.

Sian has played tennis since she was 12 years old.

Max has practiced swimming for five years.

Amy has followed that diet for five months.

Martes, 2 de febrero de 20XX Ejemplo de Texto de pie de página 17

Present Perfect
Conjugations
Remember that ‘have’ changes to ‘has’ when we used the third person singular.

I have drunk some water.

He has drunk some water.

They have run a very fast race.

She has run a very fast race.

We have had a wonderful time at the leisure centre.

Chris has had a wonderful time at the leisure centre.

Martes, 2 de febrero de 20XX Ejemplo de Texto de pie de página 18

Present Perfect
Negative Form
To make a negative form, we turn ‘have’ or ‘has’ into ‘haven’t or ‘hasn’t’

Jake has gone to the gym.

Jake hasn’t gone to the gym.

Kate has found her keys.

Kate hasn’t found her keys.

We use ‘have not’ and ‘has not’ for emphasis and in formal communications.

Paul has not paid for his gym membership.

Present Perfect
Common Adverbs
We use ‘just’ to show that an action has been completed very recently.

The football match has just finished.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have just scored!

We use ‘still’ to show that an action hasn’t happened (but probably will soon).

There still hasn’t been a goal in this game.

She still hasn’t paid for her membership.

‘Yet’ has the same meaning as ‘still’, but goes at the end of the sentence.

Tom hasn’t won the school basketball trophy yet.
