GOOD DAY!

LUBRICATING SYSTEM

The lubrication system of

an engine provides a
supply of lubricating oil to
the various moving parts in
the engine.
Objectives of Lubricating System

• To reduce the friction between the moving

parts.
• To reduce wears of the moving parts.
• To act as cooling medium.
• To keep the engine parts clean.
• To absorb shocks between bearings and other
engine parts.
• To form good seal in piston ring and cylinder
walls.
• To prevent deposition of carbon and metallic
components from corrosive attack.
Purposes of Lubrication System

CLEANING
As it circulates through the engine, the oil picks
up metal particles and carbon, and bring them back
down the pan.

COOLING
Picks up heat when moving through the engine
and then drops into the cooler oil pan, giving up
some of this heat.
REDUCTION OF NOISE
Lubrication reduces the noise of the engine.

ABSORB SHOCKS
When very loads are imposed on the bearings,
the oil helps to cushion the load.

ABSORBS CONTAMINANTS
The additives in oil helps in absorbing the
contaminants that enter the lubricating system.

For winter use
range of viscosities within it fall at the given

temperature.
For normal use 20,30,40

Components of
Lubricating System
Oil Sump

It is also known as
oil pan. It contains
drain plug at its
lowest part to drain
out the oil.
Oil Pump

The oil pumps primary

purpose is to circulate
engine oil
Oil Cooler
It cools the lubricating
oil in heavy duty
engines. It is just like a
simple heat exchanger.
Oil Filter
The oil filter helps remove
contaminants from your car
engine's oil that can
accumulate over time as the oil
keeps your engine clean.
Oil Pressure Gauge

It is used to indicate the

oil pressure in the engine.
Engine Oil Strainer

It is designed to prevent
debris and contaminants
from entering the
vehicle's engine oil.
Oil Level Indicator

It is use to check the oil

level in the crankcase.
Common Problems

1. Higher Oil Consumption.

The main factors affecting oil
consumption are engine speed and engine
wear. Engine temperature increases at high
speed due to which the oil viscosity
decreases.
Lubricating System
Maintenance
1
Checking Oil Level

Checking of oil level using a

dipstick. While checking the oil
level, the vehicle should be on a
level surface and the engine
should be stopped.
2
Changing Oil

The corrosion and rust inhibitors

become depleted, and corrosion begins
to take place on the bearing surfaces.
The oil in slowly contaminated with
carbon. In some cases moisture
gradually forms sludge in the oil.
3
Servicing the Oil Filter

Normally oil filter is serviced with the first oil

change and then after every other oil change. With
the old filter off, the recess and sealing face of the
filter bracket should be wiped with a clean shop
towel.
“ STEPS IN PERFORMING
CHANGE OIL AND OIL
FILTER.

1. CHECK THE TYPE AND AMOUNT NEEDED.

2. PREPARE YOUR FILTER, TOOLS AND

OTHER SUPPLIES NEEDED.

3. PREPARE YOUR VEHICLE.

4. LOCATE THE OIL FILTER AND DRAIN

PLUG.

5. DRAIN THE OIL.

6. TIGHTEN THE DRAIN PLUG.

7. CHANGE THE OIL FILTER.

8. ADD NEW OIL.
