Lesson objectives/aims
• To understand/know what business is all about and why you should
consider studying it.
• To understand and be aware of what subject content you will study in
the first year and what skills you will need/develop during this time.
• To be aware of where it might lead you in terms of careers.
What is Business?/What will I study?
Business is an exciting insight into the dynamic, real world. It is an
academic subject which involves studying how organisations work,
their management and the changing external environment in which
they operate. Topics areas include:

• Enterprise
• Business Plans
• Markets
• Market Research
• Business Structure
• Finance
• Marketing
• Operations Management (Production)
• Human Resources
Why study it?
• Business is a dynamic subject that will always be helpful in any career or everyday life.
• Topics are varied which will suit many different learners and keep the subject interesting.
• The course helps you to understand the role of business within today’s society and the many
challenges faced in the real world.
• Builds knowledge and understanding of world in which we live and work from a range of key
stakeholders such as customers, workers, owners, investors or the Government.
• Develops numeracy skills in terms of calculating and interpreting data and financial information.
• Analyse data and information to make supported judgements.
• Develops evaluative skills and the ability to view different opinions and make informed
conclusions.
• Learn to communicate effectively.
• If you have not studied it before - it is something different, challenging and fits in well with
many other A level choices.
