Genre based writing

What is Genre?
Genre is a purposeful, socially
constructed oral or written
communicative event such as narrative,
a casual conversation a poem, recipe or
a description.
What is genre based approach?

This approach identifies that writing


is a social activity with particular
power related and social
conventions.
Stages of a genre based approach to writing are:

1. Setting the context


2.Modelling stage
3. Joint construction
4. Independent construction
5. Comparing
Setting the context

at the beginning of any meeting is the first


step you can take to ensure that the meeting
is effective.
For example
The _______ lives in the water.
Choices: Fish, Chicken and Cow
The _______ can fly.
Choices: Bird, worm and Kangaroo
Modelling stage
During this stage, the students
become familiar with the genre
they are going to write.  They learn
about the purpose, overall
structure, and linguistic features of
the text type

Joint construction
is activity jointly between students and
teacher or students and students. In this
stage, the students and the teacher utilize
knowledge (shared knowledge) they concern
the text which have been developed in
Modeling of Text to jointly produce the text
verbally or written.
Teacher: how many steps are there?
Students : 11 steps teacher.
Teacher : can we make it less than 11?
Students : Yes teacher.
Teacher: okay make it 4 steps instead of 11 .
Teacher: For the first step, let us combine steps 1 and 2.
Students: Wet your hands with water and apply soap.
Teacher: Second? Okay let us make steps 3 to 8 as one step.
Students: Rub your hands with soap, lather the back of
hands, between the fingers and under your nails.
Teacher: Okay for the 3rd step use the step number 9.
Students: Rinse your hand with the water.
Teacher: Finally?
Students: dry your hands with towels.
Teacher : Okay very good.
First step:
Wet your hands with clean water and apply soap.
Second step:
Rub your hands with soap, lather the back of your hands,
between the fingers and under your nails.
Third step:
Rinse your hands with the clean water.
Last step:
Dry your hands with clean towel.
Independent construction
Here, the independent application of new
learnt material occurs.  Students in the
previous stages have gained knowledge
about the topic, developed linguistic
characteristics of the text type and have
created a text with the assistance of a
teacher. 
Comparing
learners compare and contrast the communicative
purpose and language characteristics of the genre they
have learned with other genres.
