Power
Power
• Power can be defined at the rate which energy is
dissipated in a circuit
• The instantaneous rate at which work is done is
called the ELECTRIC POWER RATE and is
measured in WATTS
• A WATT is equal to the voltage across a
circuit multiplied by the current through
the circuit. It represents the rate at any
given instant in which work is being
done, moving electrons through the
circuit.
𝑃=𝐼 𝑉
• Substitute in P=IV. It will yield

• If we substitute V=IR in P=IV. It will yield

EXAMPLE: Calculate the power consumed in the circuit shown in Figure 7–1.
What voltage is required to deliver 2
amperes of current at 200 watts?
The heating element in a clothes dryer is rated
at 5kW and 220V. How much current does it
draw?

An electric heater is operated by applying a

potential difference of 60 V across a nichrome
wire of total resistance 9 ohms. What is the
power rating of the heater?
ELECTRICAL ENERGY AND ITS COST

• The unit of energy used by power companies to

calculate the consumption is the kilowatt-hour
(kWh). This is the energy delivered in one hour
at a constant rate of 1 kW.
• For example, how much does it cost to operate a 20’’ desk
fan for 12 hours which has a power rating of 79 W if
electrical energy costs P 12/kWh?

• Given : cost of energy=P 12/kWh

P= 79W=0.079kW
t= 12 h
• Find: cost to operate the fan for 12 hours

• Home survey
INSTRUCTIONS:
• List, in a table similar to the one above, all the electrical appliances in your
home. The 4 column headings should read: Appliance, power rating, number of
hours and cost.
• Estimate the number of hours for which each appliance is used on a typical day.
• Calculate the daily cost of each appliance, using 12 pesos/kWh as the unit price.
Remember to count the number of light bulbs you have in your home and
multiply that by the cost for 1 light bulb.
• What was your total estimated electricity cost for one day?
• If there are 30 days in an average month, what would your estimated monthly
bill be?
• Can you think of any ways that your family could reduce the amount of electricity
you use?
