operating system is a
system software that
works as an interface
between and a computer
user and a computer
hardware . Examples –
Microsoft windows .
 Hardware
Hardware are the
physical components
of the computer
system in which we
can see , feel or touch
Examples of
hardware are
monitor , keyboard
scanner , mouse , cpu
etc.
 Software
Software is a
program or
collection of
programs that
performs a
specific task in
which we cannot
see or touch .
Examples –
excel, msword,
spread sheet etc
 system software
System software help to run
other software on the
computer system
and controls all the operations
of the computer system.
Examples:-Linux ,Google
ios, android etc.
 Application software
Application software allows the
users to do their work
and it is developed
of set of programs in
which we can perform only
specific task.
Example:-youtube, sticky notes
Google drive etc.

ARRANGING FILES AND FOLDERS
It helps to arrange files and folders stored on a hard disk .
It keeps track of information when a file is created ,
copied and modified.
ASSIGNING TASKS TO CPU
It assigns tasks to CPU according to the instructions
given by the user.
MANAGING MEMORY
It manages the memory space for multiple processes.It
keeps tracks of every memory location whether it is
MANAGING RESOURCES
It keeps tracks of software and hardware requirements for the
processes.
MANAGING DEVICES
It manages and controls all the input and output devices
connected to the computer .
SECURITY
It has a inbuild security module to protect the programs and data
stored on the computer system against the unauthorized access.

1.Single user operating system :-It is an type of an
operating system which allows only one user to access the
computer system at a time . Examples – palm computer ,
DOS etc
2. Multi user operating system :- This type of operating
system allows multi users which can access the computer
system at a time . Examples – windows and Linux
3. Multi –processor operating system :-It is a type of an
operating system which has more than one CPU to manage
the functioning of the computer . It provides higher speed
and has the capable to run more than one application at the
same time . Examples-windows NT , unix etc
4.Multi tasking operating system :-This type of the
operating system allows the users to execute multiple tasks
one one computer at one time . All the tasks share one
common processing resource like CPU . Examples –
windows 7, windows 10 , UNIX etc
5. Real time operating system:- This type provides certain
capabilities for example control machine, instruments and
industrial system with specified time period .
