Ebers Papyrus
- is also known as Papyrus.
Ebers
- is an Egyptian medical papyrus of
herbal knowledge dating to circa 1550 BC.
Among the oldest preserved medical
documents.

Medical Knowledge
- The Ebers Papyrus is written in hieratic Egyptian
writing and represents the most extensive and best-preserved
record of ancient Egyptian medicine known.

• Heiratic- is the name given to cursive writing system used


for Ancient Egyptian.
• Empiricism- is an epistemological theory that holds that
knowledge.

Papyrus contains chapters on:

- Contraception
- Diagnosis of pregnancy and other gynecological matters
- Eye and skin problem
- Dentistry and the surgical treatment of abscesses and tumors
- Bone-setting
- Burns

Examples of remedies in the Ebers Papyrus include:

• Birth control – to prevent conception, smear a paste of dates,


acacia, and honey to wool and apply as a pessary.
• Diabetes mellitus- drink a mixture including elderberry, asit plant
fibres, milk, beer-swill, cucumber flowers, and green dates.
• Guinea-worm disease- wrap the emerging end of the worm
around a stick and slowly pull it out. 3,500 years later, this
remains the standard treatment.

Theophrastus
• He was born in 371 B.C. after
heading the Lyceum for 35 years.
• He was one of the early Botanists of
the world. He is also known as the “
Father of Botany” due to his major
writing on plants.

• Theophrastus was a scientist and philosopher who made significant
contributions to nearly every area of thought and science, and in particular
the study of botany and ecology. Originally named Tyrtamus, he received
the nickname Theophrastus, meaning “divine speech”, from Aristotle
(384-322 b.c.).
• He was a scholar, botanist, biologist, and physicist. The most important of
his books are two large botanical treatises, Enquiry into plants, and On the
Causes of Plants, which constitute the first systemization of the botanical
world and were major sources for botanical knowledge during antiquity
and the Middle Ages.
• One of his books called “ Enquiry into Plants” classified the plants based
on their geographical ranges, sizes, uses, and growth patterns.

Terra sigillata, or “ sealed earth”, was a clay-like soil that was believed
to have medicinal qualities. It was first used on the Greek island of
Lemnos in around 500 BCE. It was usually prepared into cakes and
then dried. The clay was crushed into the powder and then taken with
liquids or made into a paste and smeared on the body.

Potter’s Stamps

Incredibly important for dating pottery because it can identify


individual potters, their location and the time period in which they
worked.

Sigillata is an excellent indicator of the time period where a
site was inhabited because;

• Sigillata is a very diverse type of pottery


• Due to consumers taste, styles changed over time
• Locations where they were made allowed variety of style and
color as well
• Potter’s Stamps can be traced to specific periods of time
