Introduction
What is complementary and integrative
medicine?

• These types of practices are alternatives to

traditional western medicine.

• Pain relief and management of symptoms

isn’t always fixed with just prescriptions,
this brings in a more natural way of
addressing the problems.

01
Introduction
What is complementary and integrative
medicine?

• These practices should never be used

alone, it is meant to work alongside with
traditional care.

• They can increase outcomes, mood, and

positive effects of treatment.

02 Chiropractic Medicine
02
Chiropractic Medicine
• Chiropractic medicine is one of the most popular forms of integrative medicine in modern times.

• This is the practice of adjusting your muscles, joints, and bones to help relieve pain.

• By pressing into joints and moving your body around, Chiropractors can help release pressure and tension.

• This form of treatment is now covered by most insurance providers in at least some portion.

Chiropractic Medicine

02
Special Speaker!
Meet Dr. Pete Haggenjos!

• Owner and founder of Thrive Chiropractic.

• What benefits are there to seeing a Chiropractor?

• Increased immune system, reduction of injuries, better blood flow,

increased mood, and decreased pain levels in multiple areas.

• What conditions can be treated?

• Back pain, shoulder pain, allergies, epilepsy, infertility, arthritis,

digestive issues, and more (Dr. Haggenjos, 2022).
02
Chiropractic Medicine Study
• Chiropractic care can help even adverse, non-muscle related conditions such as Asthma.

Results showed “a study of 81 asthmatic children reported an improvement in 90.1% after being under chiropractic care for
60 days. The children ranged from 1 to 17 years of age. The number of asthma "attacks" decreased by an average of 44.9%,
and 30.9% decreased their use of medication” (Kent, 1998).

• This shows the significant difference complementary medicine can make in everyday lives with common conditions.

• Chiropractic medicine can improve overall life quality and happiness for all ages!
03 Massage Therapy
03Massage Therapy
• Massage Therapy is the practice of manipulating the body’s muscles. This can relieve pressure and reduce aches
and pains.

• Massage therapy focuses more on the muscles rather than the bones in Chiropractic applications.

• Massage therapy also can have a greater impact on the mind rather than the physical body.

• Benefits include reducing stress, anxiety, and helping clear the mind of overwhelming thoughts.

14
03 Massage Therapy Study
• Not only can massage therapy benefit one’s mental health but complement your physical health as well!

“All patients had degenerative lesions of the spine that were diagnosed by their primary care physician. Patients

received classical therapeutic back massages for a period of 3 weeks at a frequency of 2 times a week. Each treatment

session was 40-minute-long. Analysis of pain was performed before and immediately after therapy to assess changes in

pain…There was a reduction in pain intensity (VAS) and pain perception after massage therapy” (Wilk et al., 2022).

15
04 Yoga
Yoga
• Yoga is a practice of stretching muscles as well as
meditating.

• Breathing practices are commonly used

throughout the different poses to concentrate
energy.

• Yoga can be used as a great form of

decompression, it can reduce depression, anxiety,
and improve mental focus.

• Yoga is simple enough to be done from home or

by yourself!

There will be a homework assignment in between week 2 and week 3 of class.

This will be a reflective journal based on doing yoga every day for at least 20 minutes.

You can do the same poses from the video walkthrough or research your own!

For 7 days, you will do yoga and reflect on how it impacts you physically and mentally.

This assignment is meant to encourage you to feel the long-term results and help create a solid routine if you wish to
