Figures of Speech
Figures of speech are literary devices used to
enhance the quality of language. They provoke
a thought process and depth to it .These
expressions use words or sounds which are
arranged in a particular emotion and mood.
1. Simile – a comparison of
two unrelated objects with the
use of as or like.
Examples:
1. The alien’s skin was as
white as paper.
2. The alien’s hair were like
metallic copper.
2. Metaphor – a direct
comparison of two unrelated
objects without the use of as or
like.
Examples:
1. The glowing chip was a
beacon in the dark tunnel.
2. The alien’s eyes were
yellow jewels in the dark.
3.Personification – This refers to
the art of bringing life to an
inanimate object, trait, or
action ,by associating it with a
human quality.
Examples:
1. The transporter danced
wildly on the rugged terrain.
2. The stars danced playfully
in the moonlit sky.
4.Hyperbole – A hyperbole is a
figure of speech used to
emphasize on something. The
emphasis is achieved by the use
of exaggeration.
Examples:
1. He was thirsty enough to
drink a river dry.
2. Her brain is the size of a
pea.
5.Onomatopoeia – Onomatopeia
is the formation of a word or a
group of words that imitate the
sound they denote.
Examples:
1. Water plops into the pond.
2. The passing breeze
whooshes by.
6.Alliteration – Alliteration refers to the
repetition of a consonant sound, at least
three times in a sentence .It is often used
as a figure of speech in poetry. Even
advertisement use alliteration in their tag
lines to make the ads more memorable.
Examples:
1. Sandy’s seven sisters slept
soundly.
2. He had hidden himself here.
