LIFESTYLE THAT AFFECTS THE FUNCTIONING
OF THE RESPIRATORY AND CIRCULATORY
SYSTEM
MELC : INFER HOW ONE’S LIFESTYLE CAN AFFECT
THE FUNCTIONINGNOF THE RESPIRATORY
AND CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
 At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:

 Identify how to detect, prevent, and treat diseases the affect

the respiratory and circulatory system;
 Recognize the importance of healthy lifestyle in avoiding such
diseases; and
 illustrate practices showing healthy lifestyle to prevent
respiratory and circulatory diseases.
Cigarette SMOKING is Dangerous
to your Health
Smoking or the tobacco epidemic is labelled as one of the biggest
public health threats. According to World Health Organization, it
kills six million persons in a year, five million of which are result
of direct tobacco use while more than 600,000 are non-smokers who
were exposed in second-hand smoke

 Hundreds of No to Smoking campaigns have been launched, but

still consumption of tobacco products are still increasing globally,
in fact, this is one of the biggest industry worldwide.

Smoking Fast Facts:

 Tobacco/cigarette is the ultimate toxic cocktail – one

cigarette contains more than 4,000 chemicals many of
which are poisonous. Some of these poisons are carbon
monoxide, arsenic, ammonia, formaldehyde, tar and
more.
This habit does not only put yourself into risk but others
around you- Smokers only inhales 15% of the smoke from their
cigarette, and 85% is either inhaled by other people or is absorbed
in the atmosphere.

 The Centers for Disease Control and Diseases (CDC)

estimates that adult male smokers lose an average of 13.2 years of life
and female smokers lose 14.5 years of life because of smoking, and
given the diseases that smoking can cause, it can steal your quality of
life long before you die.
Smoking increases the risk of getting lung
cancer, pneumonia, emphysema and chronic
bronchitis. You are also at risk in getting coronary
heart disease and stroke other than lung related
diseases.
DISORDERS AND DISEASES OF THE HUMAN
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
 1. Tuberculosis (TB) – Infectious disease that is caused by tubercle
bacillus, Myobacterium tuberculosis, TB spreads through the air
when a person with TB of the lungs or throat coughs, sneezes, or
talks.

 2. Influenza – An acute viral infection of the upper or lower

respiratory tract that is marked by fever, chills, and a generalized
feeling of weakness and pain in the muscles, together with varying
degrees of soreness in the head and abdomen.
 3. Asthma – A chronic disorder of the lungs in which inflamed
airways are prone to constrict, causing episodes of wheezing, chest
tightness, coughing and breathlessness that range in severity from
mild to life threatening.

 4. Emphysema – Condition is characterized by widespread

destruction of the gas-exchanging tissues of the lungs, resulting in
abnormally large air spaces.

 5. Pneumonia – Inflammation and consolidation of the ling tissue

as a result of infection, inhalation of foreign particles, or
irradiation.
DISORDERS AND DISEASES OF THE
HUMAN CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
 1. Angina – is characterized by severe and recurrent chest
discomfort and pain, caused due to lack of blood supply and/or
oxygen supply in the muscles of the heart.

 2. Arteriosclerosis – is a blood circulation problem, resulting

from accumulation of fatty deposits in walls of the blood vessels,
especially arteries. In other words, arteries are primarily
affected by the arteriosclerosis.

 3. Cardiomyopathy – is caused due to weakening of the heart muscles
or myocardium. In the early stages, the ventricular muscles of the
lower heart chamber are affected. If left untreated, it spreads to the
upper heart muscles.

 4. Congenital Heart Defect – is present at birth and may be mild or

severe. The fetus may show incomplete and/or abnormal development
of the heart organ, causing symptoms like heart murmur in infants.

 5. Coronary Artery Disease also known as coronary heart disease, is

by far most common disease of the circulatory system diagnosed in
adults. It is caused due to the arteriosclerosis, i.e. accumulation of
plaque in the secondary arterial walls, which indirectly impairs the
blood supply to the heart ,
 6. Hypertension or high blood pressure another frequently diagnosed of the
circulatory system. Over here, the blood pressure systolic and diastolic) reading
remains constantly higher than the normal recommended level.
 Hypertension can damage the heart and blood vessels, thereby increasing the risk of
heart attack and other heart diseases.

7. Hypercholesterolemia or high cholesterol is characterized by elevated cholesterol

level. There are two primary types of cholesterol, namely; low-density lipoproteins
(LDL) or bad cholesterol and high-density lipoproteins (HDL) good cholesterol. Presence
of high amount of bad cholesterol (LDL) increases the risk for heart diseases or stroke.

8. Peripheral Vascular Disease affects the blood circulation to the extreme portions of
the body, including the arms and legs. Peripheral artery disease is the most common
type of peripheral vascular disease, which is the deposition of fatty acids in the arterial
walls.
Best way to Prevent Diseases in
Respiratory and Circulatory Systems
The best way to prevent diseases from the RS and CS is to have a
healthy lifestyle, which includes:

a. Balanced diet,
b. Regular exercise,
c. Adequate rest,
d. Proper hygiene, and
e. avoiding vices (smoking cigarette & alcohol drinking)
